Pruning a Cabbage Palm (Cordyline Australis)

Hello fellow juicers,I'm looking for some advice on pruning a cabbage palm. One of my customer's has one growing very close to their house so much so that I trimmed all the old flower stalks and leaves back that were rubbing on their bedroom window. Now they've asked me to trim it in down, but I'm concerned that it will not re-sprout from where I cut it.Any suggestions?

  • I wouldn't hack into it any more if I was you, it will probably end up looking pretty nasty and never re-cover.

I accidentally dug a hole a bit too close to a large Cordyline and under-mined it. I quickly re-filled the hole and staked the Cordyline (artificially changing the plants leaning angle). After a year I removed the stake and the plant was solid at it's new incline. Maybe you could do this act on purpose to 'save' this Cordyline?
  • In Cornwall it's possible to simply saw through the stem, (with a very fine toothed saw). But I wouldn't attempt this away from this climate.

I agree with the guys above, as an extra loads of rich potash, (ash straight from a fire), they love it.
  • Unfortunately I can't move it, it's been planted in a block paved drive. Oh well I'll just have to explain that it can't be topped and just keep trimming the leaves.

    Thanks for all the advice.
