John, what do you want it to do (apart from cut grass), do you want side discharge, rear discharge, mulching etc.
We bought a Kubota Z122R this season, its had the mulch kit and blades in from day one and leaves a very good finish on regular cuts - if hacking down 'first cuts' it does leave a bit of debris behind but asking it to mulch 3 plus inches was an unfair test really.
Its high end domestic/entry level commercial - buying out of season saw us part with a shade over £4K....
We wew attracted to this model as it has roll over protection and seatbelt fitted from factory - which was a H and S requirement for us.
Zero turns are 'quirky' to load onto trailers till you get the hang on them and certainly makes you think we strapping them down as they can move very easily due to front castor wheels. We have made and fitted some 'tie down brackets' to help with this.
We would use this for around housing estates, football fields, around church yards, all to be cut on a weeekley basis or 3 times weekley.
We would prefer a mulcher that would mulch reasobly well. we dont have any real chalanging embankements, but who knows what may be around the corner.
We have recently been discussing zero turns and out-front mowers. Have a read through this thread -

a lot of years ago i used a grass hopper zero turn i was quite impressed with it it depends if there is a agent in your area, depends what your local shop sells and go from there as if you buy from them you might get better servis if things need mending
Hi all, 1st post so hope okay to ask fresh question within this thread.
We have a community 5 acre sports field that a local farmer cuts 3+ acres at the moment and leaves maybe 2 acres around edges. We are in process of tidying up the area and need to purchase a mower to do this 2 acres and cover the entire 5 acres every other time. Zero turn mowers have been advised as our best option as we will not be collecting and we need some advice on best mower to get, our budget is €6,000, €7,000 at a push. A robust machine would be ideal. There are no trees or obstacles other than 2 sets of goals.
Snapper ZTX275 48" €5,050
Hustler Raptor SD 48" €6,250
Stiga ZT5132 52" €6,000
Gravely Proturn 52 €6250 (incl. €250 for mulcher kit)
Gravely Proturn 148Z €6,500 (last year's demo model)
All advice welcome! We know a diesel machine is preferable but out of our budget presently unfortunately.
All prices in € as here in Ireland. €1 = St£0.88 today.
have you asked the farmer to cut the rest of the field ?
also have you looked at the other side of the border to see how the prices compair
He's been doing this way for decades and is not for turning! Does it for free in fairness so hard to quibble with that.
Had look cross border but got burnt with a quote that was changed the next day when we agreed to go with that price. The more local the better re servicing & issues but hard to turn down a good deal.
I bought a new Hustler Raptur 42" this year to replace a previous Hustler model which I had for 7 years.
Very happy with it and you can change it to side discharge for long or wet grass which I did and it was great.
What area of grass are you cutting with it Noel and how many hours per week does it see?
I bought a new Hustler Raptur 42" this year, had the previous model for 7 years, very happy with it and excellent service from dealer.
