We've been using a toro 42" zero turn timecutter mulcher for the last couple of seasons - not a commercial machine, but it's taken a hell of a lot of work and harsh use. Hasn't missed a beat. Generally, I've been very happy with our toro mowers as being the most robust machines.
It's fast and leaves a good finish.
Did look at a similar priced John Deere 42" zero turn mulcher. Seemed about the same - stuck with the toro as the dealer is good for us. A good dealer is just as important as the machine itself for us.
Been running Toro cylinder (parks and greens) and Toro flails for harsher terrain. I'm with you, very robust and reliant.
Most local authorities go this route for verges and open spaces which is a good indicator as to their durability.
I use a Honda hf2417 mostly mulching, not the fastest or cheapest but it works for me.
The Honda is another one I looked at - Cannot fault Honda. Just feel that they are a little bit on the expensive side. Does it cope on uneven terrain?
Quite well but the draw back is the ratchet height adjustment, the deck can be lifted by uneven ground onto a higher cut so you have to keep your eye on it so you cut at the same height. But the adjustment is easily done on the fly.
I like my Stiga park pros, great mulching or rear discharge. fast 4wd good deck etc. etc.
I did look at the Stiga. The Pro looks good - sadly out of my price range. What are the cheaper models like?
No idea sorry.
If you are going round trees and obstacles - get a zero turn hands down.
We bought a Kubota Z122R early this year and its been a game changer for us. Its had the mulch kit in from day one and leaves good results even in tough going and fortnightly cuts.
All depends what your budget is though. We got a deal buying 'out of season' and on shop soiled stock just over £4K with the VAT and the mulch kit.
I was thinking of about £2500. If however, Zero Turn is the way to go, accept I will have to pay more.
