Yell.com ?

HI All

I have been contacted by Yell. com, after i asked if i could be in their free on line listing. They have asked if i would be interested in paying a fee which would put me on their first page, in the top 6 garden firms. If someone types in Garden services Exeter i would be in the top 6. Those in the top 6 revolve position over 6 days. This would mean that any one who looks on line would see my name.  This would cost me £300 per year.

So, What do you think? Any one done this?

I have been in business for 1 1/2 years. I have been very busy this year, almost maxed out, so i am not so sure if i need it. I started my business by posting homemade flyers and that has brought me some of my best customers.

Im not sure which way to go with it all next year. I have not spent any money on adverts so far.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Kevin

    Don't do it!

I would disagree, yell has worked for me for the last 10 years and brought in very good work. personally I think YELL is very geographic and if you do a search on ljn for related threads you will get varying opinions.

BUT as it seems you are going great guns as you are then I would stick with the free listing for now anyway, winters on its way and £300 in your pocket is better than in YELL's.

You may want to think about it in March next year though

  • Build a good website if you don't have one and look into SEOs (search engine optimisation and depending on where you are and what the competition is like you may be able to get to number one for free for not that much of your time. I have had a lot of people contact me (commercial clients) saying they cant be bothered shopping around and as long as I don't take the piss with the price then I have the job. Yell are dead and they're just trying to jump on other bandwagons that you can do yourself.

  • what happens if there is more than 6 ? round here there is a booklet delivered free to each house once a month its called on your doorstep. not shore how much it costs to put a advert in

  • free listing only .  dont trust them

  • I have found it does not work this year but did last year, to be honest I won't be doing it again as yell is my most expensive form of advertising but only gives us 5% of all calls. Our website does the most business for us and we are slightly going to tweak it for next year.

    Hi David,

On Your Doorstep, booklets are published in Pocklington & cover half of North Yorkshire

    http://onyourdoorstep.co.uk/

in 2009 it cost us £45 for 1/8 page advert, think Business card size, the charges vary depending upon the coverage of the publication, e.g Harrogate is more expensive

Personally it was a waste of money, but there are loads of A5 booklet publications everywhere

Local to us there is the Ryedale Handymag & there is a York edition, & the Yorkshire Advertiser which is published by Ryedale Print.

A quarter page advert in the Yorkshire Advertiser is typically 1/3 of the cost of other booklets.

Different booklets are aimed at different market sectors, (clearly), some booklets group same trades together, great for customers, not so good for advertiser.

Booklets with articles are better, as they are more likely to be read, some publishers allow you to submit articles, trick is to get paid.

  • when im personally looking for a company to carry out a service for me i skim past all the add like yell, recommened trades ect and check to first actuall companies website ?

  • I have not advertised in yell, I would not even bother to get the free listing, when the new yell comes through the front door, it goes straight out the back door into the recycling. If I ever need a service I would ask someone - word of mouth best way. Or maybe an internet search. I think it would be a waste of money, £300 better spend having your own website designed which will once made can just be altered by you at no cost. Yell is only a 12 month advert.
