vector Works

I am a Garden Designer who designs by hand that is it's all hand drawn, no CAD drawings. I am at the stage where clients expect to see run throughs of their gardens before they are built so I am looking to buy Vector works which I believe is the industry approved package. It's also very expensive at £2,000 plus training costs. Has anyone had experience using this package and is it good value for money and EASY to use for a relative technophobe like myself. If anyone has a copy they do not want/use and would consider selling then I would be interested.

  • Vectorworks is extremely complicated as well as extremely expensive. I'd have a look at Sketchup if I were you.
  • Hi Anne,

I work with both SketchUp and Vectorworks Landmark and would have this to say. SketchUp will offer you a sketchy, 3D model of your garden which you can create basic flythroughs. Vectorworks is more comprehensive, allowing you to create both your 3D model, flythrough and all your 2D drawings. It also has a plant database that allows you to create your plant lists directly from the plant objects that you have placed on the drawing. Vectorworks may take a little longer to learn ( although with the training you mention this time will be reduced), but it will provide you with more choice in the long term.
  • Hi Martyn and thanks for your reply. I have had a look at SketchUp and whilst it's OK I think that Vector works will give me more options. I do a lot of planting plans too and SketchUp doesn't give me the plant data base that I would need.
