  I'm sorry to hear that you've been ill - I know how devastating this can be to both work and general morale...and I know it can take a while to recover as well but things always get better Anne that is for certain!
  
  We have had a busy January I must be honest but we are still suffering from project postponements and withdrawals - last night I heard that an upcoming £17.5K project won't start as scheduled in March and will be July at the earliest IF it is still financially viable for the client...as was the story of late 2008 and most of 2009.
  
  I hope that things get better for you - certainly you will see an upturn this coming month...especially with your Google dominance!! ;)

  Hi Nicky, this has been an awful year for me as a garden designer. Unfortunately I was ill last April and had to take a couple of months off which was right at the time when it starts to get busy so I lost out then and this had a knock on effect for the rest of the year. I also think getting a design drawn up is seen as a luxury and therefore it's the first thing to go when people make cutbacks. This year is slow to start too - probably because of the weather but I hope things begin to pick up. I'm always keen to hear of good contractors and am happy to pass on names if you need them so please give me a call. I don't employ anyone - I met a contractor on the same course at college and he's been doing most of the hard landscaping for me since then and that's been 8 years now.
  I also joined a networking group too so am optimistic that this will work as I already have a couple of jobs pending there.

  The end of 2008 was very rough and I had to lay off 6 guys and re-build the business. I took an apprentice on as a designer and landscaper in 2009 to help me out in the office and also to learn the trade and we use contractors now for almost every project. I must admit that the current model works more efficiently and is far less stressful than having half a dozen full-time employees...especially on a day like today!
  
  Last year was busier than previous years and this year is proving to be even busier and with better value contracts so I am pleased - I have found it hard previously to get good value contracts that will include planting schemes and electrics etc (as opposed to simply the hard landscaping) but this is happening now so hopefully my portfolio will be building up to rival yours soon!!
  
  How have things been for yourself?
  
  Would you be interested in perhaps sharing a pool of reliable labourers (and perhaps even contractors)? I sometimes struggle to get reliable bricklayers and roughcasters although I have an excellent electrician and machine operators...good labourers are difficult to find!
  
  Anyway if this is of interest then let me know - if not then I understand! ;)
