Stihl Combi Conundrum

My Stihl combi system has started to turn the blades/strimmer cord all the time, even at idle. I have tried adjusting the fuel/air mixture and the idle speed but cannot get the attachment to stop with the engine still running. This makes it hazardous especially when adjusting the angle of the hedge trimmer attachment! Has anyone any idea what this could be and how to rectify it? Many thanks, Steven.

    Hi,

I believe that would be down the power head clutch dragging and not disengaging at tickover.

It may be have 'debris' in it (unlikely) or it could have overheated/expanded and hence drag.

Seperately (but not related), make sure you top up the gearbox on the attachment with the right grease. Stops this overheating as well...

Update us when you know, as we run several combi systems (KM85's, KM130's) and knowledge is power !
  • Thanks Gary but it is both the string head and the hedge trimmer attachment that run all the time now, so I would see the problem being the power unit rather than the attachment. both attachments are regularly topped up with Stihl grease.

  • Thanks Adrian, don't think its the fuel mix as I use the Stihl shot in a 5ltr gas can.....

Make sure your fuel oil mix is correct if you haven't already. This can make a difference.
  • Hi Steven,

my FS55 strimmer has been doing the same recently. Have been advised it may be the throttle cable not coming to rest at its natural resting place at idle. Visually I followed the cable from trigger to engine, and at rest, the linkage to which it is attached should butt up against the end of a screw, then swing away via the linkage when you pull the trigger. Difficult to describe I'm afraid, but if you have trouble then go and see a man who can.
    Good luck.

Hi had the exact sam problem, it turned out to be the three springs in the clutch had streched with wear and needed replaceing. It is possible to do it yourself but I just got my local shop to do it. Hope that helps.
  • I'm sure this is covered in the manual with a howto on how to adjust...

Sounds like the centrifugal clutch to me, take apart, brush with a wire brush and reassemble.

It might also be worthwhile squirting some wd40 into the clutch housing after the machine has been used in the wet so as to prevent rust build up.

    Steve.

sorry did not mean to confuse..

The clutch is in the power head and as it happens on all attachments, it is likely to be this.

If the tickover speed is correct, cable adjustment. fuel mixture etc is not the issue. It's simply that the drive does not disengage at the right speed.

If the tickover speed is set too high then the clutch will not disengage and you need to investigate whether it's simply a speed adjustment or cable adjustment ot fuel mixture screw (unlikely if its been ok previously)

This mention of gearbox grease was just a FYI..
  • Sounds to me like its the throttle button. Inside they tend to wear down (cable i think) and eventually they get stuck. I think you`ll find if you take it to a decent repair shop they will know the problem instantly and it wont cost you alot at all to fix.
  • is it not the 'slot' , plastic sleeve where it -connects-- to the attatchment ? ive had this inserted wrong and it dont turn/ spin end.........
