Stihl Autocut 25-2 problems

We have recently fitted a new style bump feed head to our Kombi Strimmer and are struggling to make it work properly. The spool that came with it worked reasonably ok but since then it doesn't seem to feed properly and the line 'sticks' to itself. We are currently using Stihl 2.4 square profile line, previously Vortex and B and Q square section, all with similar or worse results. Has anyone else had similar problems? Thanks

  • its obviously not the line then...... do it happen all the time or just when its been running for a while. Presume the spring is still there!! I'm sure you are aware that it needs to be revved up quite fast when you bump the head or the cord will not move through. Otherwise, just get a new head... they're only about £30... make sure its a genuine Stihl one.

  • Hi Geoff, it is a genuine Stihl one, bought from a dealer and is only a month old! Sometimes it bumps out fine (rarely), spring is still there, I rev it when I bump the head.I don't want to go out and buy another head the same and have the same problem.

  • Might be a silly question, but I've used the Stihl line for decades and it's round. It makes sense that a smooth line will unwind better, is there any advantage to a square line, that must be prone to snagging?

  • twisted cord is quieter. I use thick stuff for rough or big areas.

Silver strong,?? Square for normal use ,/ lawn edges.

Both get jammed every time. Manually pull every other use !

    No wastage though..

I wish it didn't as I still have 200m roll left on each from landscape direct offer !!
  • i have the same problem with my MCculloch trimmer is a small domestic strimmer i use for edging but the line sometime stick to itself basically it melt's i have found if you leave it short it snags but if you leave it slightly long it cools down quick enough not to melt, it might not be the problem just sounds similar, just something to consider rev the engine then bump, round line is for standard grass is you have thick grass with some heavier weeds in then the square line is for you, i am currently using a star shaped line great for thin grass and edging but not for thick stuff.

When I have seen this, the line / spool is often very hot and discussing it once at a Dealer, they suggested it can be caused by reverse wound spools (which would never feed out anyway), 'badly' wound spools causing line friction or no grease in the head gearbox (thus causing it to heat up and pass thru to strimmer head and make line 'sticky').

Separately we no longer use the Stihl head, swapping over to Oregon Easy load heads (slightly cheaper than Stihl) that have a metal bump button rather than the plastic and do not need to be dismantled to load:

We use silver diamond shaped line (Titanium ) and find it good and quite aggressive:

  • Thanks Gary, do you know whether this fits the Kombi head by any chance? Looks interesting :-)

They do, but may need adapter bolts/washers. I am sure from memory ours were a direct swap on Stihl gear.

Also, if you can't get Oregon then look for Efco (as in landscape maintenance equipment maker)Strimmer heads (we believe they are same, packaged differently but slightly cheaper)

We simply got fed up with paying out £25+vat or more for the Stihl ones which are harder to use.

  • Gary has pretty well nailed it I reckon..but just as an aside bumping the head fairly regularly to feed line is good because it will maintain a longer line and therefore the tip speed of the line will be higher and the cut of the line better, it also helps stop the line sticking through heat build up and melting together or wedging in the head running the line short will only mean more fuel usage and more work for you, I use vortex line and only occasionally suffer sticking line..a build up of crud can also upset your bump feed...

    Cheers

  • I have 3 of these heads in use always loaded with Oregon line (metal core). I trake them apart to load with a max of 2 metres each side. Doing this has stopped all the jams and sticking of line feed. A bit longer to load but overall much more effecient. Just pushing the line in both sides, as per instructions always caused jams..
