Fence Panels, What colours?

Its been a while since I made any comments on here, that's purely because we are very busy manufacturing wpc decking and developing new products.
We are about to launch a new fencing system (Fence-in-a-Box). Basically a self-assembly fence panel that replaces your typical 5' or 6' timber waney lap. Being self assembly (just 8 screws) carriage is easy, also it make the panels customisable to suit the purchasers requirements. Panel looks like a painted timber version but is much stronger, will never need painting and will come with a 20yr warranty.

Anyway, enough babbling, what I want to know is what colours should it be in?
We need to limit ourselves to 2 colours for ease of manufacture. Currently looking at very traditional dark brown & dark green.
Has anyone seen any trends for more modern colours that I should know about?
Grateful for any input, good or bad!
Alex

p.s. photo is prototype panels, not as good as the finished article will be!

  • i get asked to paint fences in a huge aray of colours, most common ive been asked are chestnut and forest green, i painted one olive green a few months ago, mine is blue, i'm sure there will be other popular colours suggested though.
  • looks rather good, and would be a lot easier than full size panels, - the most usual colours for me are dark brown, green and black, - both green and black help the panels fade into the background, - Don't do orange!
  • Dark Oak + Black.

I've gone off green big style!

I think an intial range of darker colours would be most popular.

I've seen lighter colours in this style of materials and somehow they just don't look right.....

Would like to get on mailing list when these are available....
  • Hi Alex, we have had a rep in today regarding stocking wooden fence panels( we can discuss stocking yours) from one of the largest suppliers in the country, he told me to stock 75% Brown and 25% tanalised, hope that is of some help.

    Good point Paul.

We've put up a fair amount of what I call European style fence panels, that are natural/gently treated green coloured over the last few years....

They look so much better than normal cheap lap larch panels from the DIY sheds.

We did one two years ago where each panel was £60+ each and used 4inch posts. It really looked good and has weathered nicely without being colour treated.

I find a lot of customers like the natural light greenish tantalized timber colour....... when I do a new fence, I often treat with clear solvent preserver so as to retain this look. As gary hints however, I'm not 100% if you could get this look or not. The natural treated timber look is also my personal favorite for what its worth.

Perhaps it would help if you update this topic once you've got sample colors you can picture then you can get feedback.

    Dark green also seem popular.
  • I agree with dark brown and the natural - certainly the most popular I am asked for - put me on the list too. Cost will, of course, be a key factor. Are the barge boards part of the range too?
  • Well thanks for all your replies, it really does help to have some input from 'the people in the know' so to speak!
We will probably keep with dark green and dark brown to start. I would like to see black as maybe an additional colour a bit later on. We will also be able to do bespoke colours but the price would be a lot higher.
We're planning on launching these panels at around £50 for a 5'. We will not be doing H posts and we wont be doing Barge boards. BUT with this product, you don't need a barge board anyway as its not going to mind being in contact with wet ground.
When we are in pre-production trialling phase, (which is our next step) I will put a post up here and offer a limited number of panels to you all at half price. This will allow us to get some feedback from you as you fit them, just in case we need to make any tweeks before product launch.
    Many thanks again.

  • to answer Colin's question - this will be trade price (but is only a rough guide at this point).
Gary: 5' was aimed at those replacing 6' panels that have a 1' gravel board already installed.
We may just supply 6' lengths and leave it up to the installer to cut to preferred length.
We don't know yet - It will be up to general consensus.

I am missing something, aren't gravel boards normally 6" (I seem to remember...) and in addition to the height of the fence - or I am going mad ?
