Feedback on ad block at the base of forums

I've taken on board what you've thought about the Google ad blocks at the base of posts and I've been trying to think of a possible solution to make this area work for you and the network.

The obvious solution was to add publicity that could benefit everyone but this is what I propose...please give it some thought and we can work on the detail.

The advert (not the final one but an idea of what we can do) will act as publicity for network members. It is linked to the find a landscaper, gardener, designer page where I have manually added everyone's details (those who've asked to be in it).

What do you think?

No, I tried out of interest by modifying an old campaign to see if I could. Just didn't happen.

Contentious comment - Phil, if you go down that route - why not make it compulsory to pay for inclusion in this 'advert'. Treat it as paid advertising - but from LJN members

It wouldn't preclude any existing member from continuing to use LJN, use their profile page, blog etc - but by creating an "LJNwords" style advert, those that want to pay to help LJN go forward could, those that are happy with status quo would also be ok.

Just a thought ...and now waiting for the flames...

  • Good idea Gary, as long as cost reasonable I would support your idea, I suppose problem is everyone would have a diferent idea of reasonable cost

I'm experimenting here with a drop down box (I can add all the counties in here and link them through to their page on the index). Would it work with just the drop down box or should it have an image banner too?

    Gary,

It crossed my mind to make this a premium feature but it would only be effective if enough members signed up for it. It wouldn't look too hot if there were only a sprinkling of firms in the index.

  • I very much like this image, and would be up for a paying by results (i.e contact) through the drop down box.

Yes to start with there may not be as many people in the list, but that works to the favour of those that are on there.

I think it would be a nightmare to administer on a results only basis Claire.

I think the only way for this to work would be a set fee per year for one insertion with an additional payment for members who want to go in multiple counties.

Can I have some feedback on the drop down box concept. Is this a good
idea or should we just have the image link through to the index page?

That looks good. Ultimately, the choice/method/means has to be one that is easily maintainable otherwise admin will be a nightmare for Phil (?).

  • Sorry I didn't get back to you on this Colin.  To be honest, I was struggling to get my head around the concept you were proposing.  I ran it past Phil and I think he felt it was a bit complex but is obviously trying to come at it from another direction.  As I've pointed out before, I only have very limited capabilities on here and don't always have the time to exercise those.  I've looked at trying to use LJN to improve traffic to my siye but the problem is, I'm not in the trade. :-)

i think there should certainly be a way to distinguish between the various trades, as i mentioned to bigyin the other day would it be possible to allocate different coloured markers on the maps page for different trades

  • For what it's worth, I think the appearance is much more professional looking and in it's current form, is consistant.

  • Phil very kindly provided me with a short term complimentary one a while back and I also ran a little competion for a couple of freebies but it didn't really have any impact.  I guess you outdoor types aren't interested in my products :-(
