Changes to the network

Logging in today you are probably wondering what has happened to the activity feature? Ning did an update last night and added some cool new features and upgraded a few others. One of them is site chat. I have resisted chat until now because it didn't really suit what we are doing but now - I hope - the chat feature is much more powerful and useful if you want to enter into a one-to-one conversation without leaving the site. Our videos and photos sport an updated look, with icons that match the theme and colours of our network. With the new redesigned chat feature has optional audio notifications and the ability to pop out chat into a new window but essentially chat will remain constantly on the front page. The chat bar is at the very bottom of the page. You will see the pop out icons there too and you will also be able to see who is on-line. There have also been some appearance enhancements, including new default images for members who do not upload their own.

    Today has been one of the lowest days of activity we have had in a long while and I was wondering if it is because of the 'new look' activity panel?

    Let me know what you think - are the changes better - or worse?

    No problems with the new layout. Sun's been out and had a cracking day - in fact all week! So nice to get out and get work done after all that snow.

    Can I ask how you are finding the chat facility?

    It is not the most powerful of the site tools and I am frustrated that there is not a better notification method.
    I have seem messages the following day that were meant for me and messages I left for others slipped by unnoticed.

    I am sure that now Ning have introduced it that they will improve it - Should it stay or go?

    Sorry Phil but my vote would be to let it go. It doesn't seem to function as intended and I personally find it a pain that it keeps popping up every time I change pages (might be my browser settings though). I think it would be cool to add a field to the profile to allow people to add their Skype contact details if they so wished. I think it's a better bet myself.

    I have removed chat due to complaints about it popping out of the screen and blocking out the page.

    I will leave it off until it can be refined a bit better although I do like the facility for seeing who is on-line at any one time.

    I didn't know how to work the chat but liked knowing who was logged in. I find that the 'members online' to the left of home, is not in real time.
