About the Landscape Juice Network

Founded in 2008. The Landscape Juice Network (LJN) is the largest and fastest growing professional landscaping and horticultural association in the United Kingdom.

LJN's professional business forum is unrivalled and open to anyone within within the UK landscape industry

LJN's Business Objectives Group (BOG) is for any Pro serious about building their business.

For the researching visitor there's a wealth of landscaping ideas, garden design ideas, lawn advice tips and advice about garden maintenance.

I am doing some research on the ins and outs of building a series of either; wide, circular terraced steps covered in lawn or a banked (440mm total height) mound also covered in lawn. The back will be planted up to/not seen so can be steeper.

With the bank version I'm trying to find info about steepest angles for safe lawn mowing(!) and also retaining. CAN anyone point me to a good source of info?

Has anyone got first hand war stories/lessons learned they might share?

all info welcomed

    Hi Rosalind

I've found this on the HSE website (it's written by the Landscape Group from a commercial perspective but having reviewed the degree of slopes mentioned I'd say it's still relavent.:

    • Slopes of up to 15 degrees managed through normal maintenance methods using ride‐on machines with specific risk assessment.
    • Slopes of 16 to 20 degrees cut using approved pedestrian machines in line with site specific risk assessments.
    • Slopes of 20 – 30 degrees cut with specialist equipment only, pedestrian banks mower, brush cutter and only with a site specific risk assessment.
    • Slopes of over 30 degrees to be cut with side‐arm flail or remote control mower only, no pedestrian based operations.

    Don't end up like this...3314701007?profile=original

  • Thanks for the info Phil, luckily it won't be a ride on mower (garden way too small to warrant this!).
