i go on yell.com, i find i get a bit of work through that, i only do my very local area so it only cost £100 per year, easily pays for itself, i never bother with goolge ranking or paying for it
I use Yellow Pages as my only advertising medium, this year I think it cost me around £2200 for the year. Good size directory advert and position 1 sponsored listing on yell.com for landscaper in cornwall.
Last year it generated somewhere in the region of £80k worth of business for me on the landscaping side so more than paid for itself....
I do agree that they can be a bit of a pain once you have signed up though.
We have been hassled recently by the new rep, an expert in Garden & Landscapers businesses.
He just would not stop talking......
Anyway found this online, thought some of you might be interested. LOL

Yell are in severe trouble now. They made a £1.4 billion loss last year and are over £2 billion in debt. Yell are now capitalised at just a mere £38 million. Whilst digital revenues grew they just cannot fill the gap the loss from their traditional printed media have left.
They have until 2014 the renegotiate their debt with their lenders but a lot can happen in business in two years.
Thanks Phil, now that did make me laugh
lets see we've got one of the most recognisable names on the planet
so lets change it to HIBU, hibu, what's that? dear me that is truly awful

i suspected so phil. thanks .
i just got my cheque refund for £19.20p last week, - they tried to say some bullshit excuse for RESETTING UP 2 X DIRECT-DEBIT FROM 1X I HAD CANCELED ONLINE !! (FRAUD)?- i wasnt listening. again just happy to get my £19.20p back as they are desperate liars. (happy to get it as id probably wasted half an hour, (luckily only that emailing & receiving a call, banking chq and £0.85p charges) and a mini-headache.
Yell.com 'free listings' work great for me elsewhere. :)

It makes me chuckle when i get that call, they say the same yet i set up my own site and on googling Great Dunmow Gardener I am Number 1 or 2 so offer me something that I have not done yet. I think they are a bit behind the times as most web designers will do you a website with links to google etc for a few hundred pounds. If Yell submit your details to google they have to do it the sameway as I do so there is no guarantees your be first. I find it funny when companies are emailing me ideas for improvements and then asking me if i want a quote no thanks i have just done what you sugested and saved my self the money.
Yell are the victims of their own arrogance.
Some years ago customers like me tried to tell them that they needed to change but they were having none of it, probably to late in the day for them now to turn things round.
gave up with them about 5 years ago. found them over priced and very very pushy. had a sales rep turn up where we were working trying to get me to sign there and then. i virtually threw him off the site. The other thing that used to annoy me was they would say that they dont do discounts and every body pays the same, which i know for a fcat is untrue, as i know of others who were offered discounts. Got teh same from the friday-ad who we used to advertise with a lot. It worked well, but then the calls started going down. they tried to put prices up and tried to blame it on the vat increase. Told them where to stick it. Do all our advertising in local glossy mags. Much more effective and profitable.
