Who said there's no money around...

This first got aired on Chat the other night...

I had an invite to my local BMW bike dealer for the launch of the new K1600 (yes, that's right 1600cc - straight 6 cylinders), adaptive headlights, central locking/remote locking, heated seats, full comms system, digital dash, GPS, cruise control plus a whole host of other bike firsts.

Well, taking to the guy I know there, they said they had taken 17 orders by 2-3pm - the average value of each bike was £18,250 !, with a couple spec'd at over £19,000 (ie over £320k taken..)

I went back today to get my bike back and they said they had sold their entire allocation of this bike for the next 6 months.

Someone tell me where I can find some of this 'money' !!!!!

Would I have one? No. I'd go for a new R1200RT (on the company of course !)

  • People still find the money to drive around in their luxury cars yet they begrudge paying their garden £15 per hour!

Its all about the perception of value for money.....

thing is you would never see the flash car guy cutting some ones lawn for 5-10 quid so whay do they exspect you guys to, you pay for professionalism (if thats a word and even spelt correctly) and i think thats still takeing time to set in to peoples way of thinking, cheep is not always chearfull
  • people love showing off- shiny vehicles , sports cars and motorbikes,

like i said : lots of people have made much money the last 7 yrs before recession, many still are /bankers' i think they are called.......

    Is it though ?

There were a number of 'true bikers' at this event who live & breath bikes. Some commute up to London every day and don't necessarily have a car because of this ( I know I was one of those 20+yrs ago ).

The fact they choose to plough their money into a bike, doesn't always mean they are showing off - but you right a % would be showing off.

  • Gary, you and my old man would get on great, hes got about 5 BMW's in various states of repair (and dis-repair!) cluttering up our workshop / showroom / warehouse.... not to mention a francis barnett, a Suzuki GSX750f (on a G plate with only 5k miles!), various side cars and more bloody bike parts in our stores than lawn mower parts!!!!!

I could be tempted towards an R1100 I suppose but the current "child seat" requirements put pay to my bike riding days a few years ago.  Not to mention that fact I find it hard to justify having 2 grand tied up in something that would only get used for about 1k miles a year never mind having 19grand tied up in one!

  • Go for the CBR Neal,

The vibration on the Monster could be a pain after a while. Good for blasting down country roads but a pain in town. I used to have the old full fairing 750Ss.
