Morning all,

With all the discussion on here recently of cordless tools I went out and bought an HSA86, HLA85?, Super fast charger and AL300 battery when the Kombi long reach attachment gave up a few weeks back.

So far I have been extremely impressed with the battery life and have only run it flat twice in 4 weeks and happy with the noise reduction (still wear ear protection with the HSA when using for prolonged time as it seems to be slightly noisier than the long reach). I have still found that I have tingling hands a couple of times when using for a long time, still fairly heavy although this may be solved by getting a smaller battery (does this unbalance the HLA?). But the biggest difference has been not breathing in all the petrol fumes and now I really notice them on all the other kit.

AS a result I will be looking at more battery kit at Saltex and hoping to be able to change over the rest of it soon.

My question is who has actually got rid of their petrol kit and who has kept it as a back up?

Personally I have found that there are still times where the petrol trimmer has come out as the electric just doesn't have the grunt to it and I wouldn't feel comfortable not having it there as a back up. Ideally I don't want the expense of running 2 technologies side by side so am very interested to know if many people rely only on the cordless system?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Joe although I've not got rid yet my petrol strimmer, blower and hedge trimmer haven't been out of the shed since my EGO equipment got delivered !!! I'm going to hold on to them for 12 months but I can't see any way I'll be going back to petrol !! the EGO gear is 56 volt so has plenty of grunt !! I'm very impressed with it all I'm just hoping they bring out a long reach hedge trimmer soon that's all that's missing !! regards Graham

    • Hi Graham,

Thanks for that, it's good to know. I did look at the ego gear but went for Stihl as it was the long reach that I really needed so Ego just wasn't an option but maybe it will be once they bring one out.

Could you do a hedge reduction with the ego kit?

      Thanks

      Joe
      • Hi Joe,

I've only used the Hedge trimmer on a couple of "tidying up job's" but it's a lovely bit of kit this is the one I have, in the specifications it say's it will cut up to 33mm branches !! I haven't used it on any thing like that but I've no doubt that it probably would !!!

I think the 33mm is a bit optimistic:)
The big petrol hedge cutters don't like stuff that big really
          • I suspect the 33mm is actually the spacing between the teeth.....

You got something on your mind Billy ?

    • EGO told me a few weeks ago that they have a long reach trimmer due out next year sometime and it will be part of a combi. Shame it will be so long coming and combi.<br />

I liked the Stihl HLA85 when I tried it with the 300 battery - felt a bit top heavy at first but was fine once I got used to the different balance. It handled well using it on a hedging ladder standing 6' off the ground - it does have a nice big platform though. I'm waiting to try the smaller HLA65 as well before I buy and with the EGO taking a while to get to market it's likely to be Stihl for me.

I still keep a petrol strimmer for bigger strimming jobs but never use the petrol blower or hedge trimmer any more.
  • Has anyone tried using the DeWalt range of battery powered strimmer/blower/hedge trimmers?  Would be nice if I could use the cordless tool batteries I already own.

    • No but I'm considering taking a punt on the strimmer
