What tree for a windy site

I wonder what others think would be a good tree to plant on a coastal site that's exposed to a lot of wind? The soil isn't great (new build and thin topsoil). I need 8 or 9 trees an d would probably buy them at 1.8m or so.Silver birch? Mountain ash? Anything that won't cost a fortune but provide some visual interest?ThanksDan

  • Trees - Acer pseudoplatanus, Crataegus Var(ieties), Populus alba, Populus italica, Quercus ilex, Sorbus aria.
Conifers - Cupressus macrocarpa, Pinus nigra, maritima, austriaca, radiata.

Theses are recommended 'first line' defence for coastal shelterbelts.

Slightly more sheltered areas - Acer platanoides, Alnus in Var, Betula var, Castanea, Fraxinus, Ilex.
