What is your job worth?

Afternoon all

My question to you is... What is enjoying your job worth?

lets say that you earn around £20K self employed. At what price could somebody lure you into another profession/job role. £5K more? £10K more?

I would probably say my mark is about £15K more than what I earn now. So being self employed and loving what I do is worth 15 thousand pounds.

What's yours?

  • 50% more, but it depends on the job, there are a few jobs I may get more enjoyment out of than this, so The pay could be the same or less... Such as Work in conservation, plant breeding etc

I think its impossible to price this - most of us who run businesses (whether single man thru to mutlipel staff) do so not just because of the financial aspect but the mental aspect and desire to be your own boss or run & build a sucessful business.

Some will be tempted by an increase in money, but often it is short lived with issue of working for/under someone else surfacing some while later.

It's not just a straight financial calculation. When running a business it is possible to be better off due to dividends, perks, hours you choose, vehicles, fuel etc than when working as an employee and getting paid PAYE.

  • Very true Gary.

This is just one of many random things that bounces around in my head whilst weeding/sweeping/mowing etc.!

Oh, I know just what you mean !

The number of times I have put the world to rights while digging, planting, mowing & pointing ...

It's one of the aspects I enjoy, being able to digest things, mull them over and make decisions while doing certain jobs.

I get the same buzz when I ride my motorbike !

  • Its crazy really, the only time I get to think is when I'm actually working! Away from the hustle and bustle of the office (or 'the van' as some call it) - ear defenders on, mower on, and just my thoughts and I!

Other subjects that rattle around range from ...

Can you supercharge a lawn mower?

Why are the youth of today so annoying?

Why do 'Fruit Shoot' bottles fly so far when run over with a lawnmower?

    the list is endless...

  • on my 9th season this summer......

nothing else im sure would have guaranteed my income and job for this long.

also learning and furthering my field of work is good .

you can go in many .many directions within this industry .   gardens, landscaping, plants, design, sales and change if you can pick your jobs when you feel like it...

for me really , when you think about a change in career it wins everytime / outdoors and even with all its pitfalls :  weather, wasted quotes, melting your clothes on an exhaust, grease from towbar on your leg and machines getting broken ............ elecs on trailer forgot to be put on ...  and 'fruits shoot bottles ?!! - guess im lucky , but i would not mow them anyhow as i have a litter picker and bin bag  :)

  • Can you actually picture yourself in a £100k job? The stress, the corporate conformity, the COLLEAGUES! Really really try and picture it and then answer this question.

If I was offered an employed role as a gardener at £50k I would take it.

I too have had this thought.............for about 5 seconds. Right at this time I am having a lot of grieve in my business, staff, money payments, machines breaking down etc etc. I have worked as a scaper, labourer, machine operator, office through to senior management and ran my business for the last 9 years, all the trials and tribulations you have to endure getting your business up and running through the first few years, no paid holidays, tax and vat man to worry about, etc etc etc, yep, wouldn't give this up for anything................................... except the 5 numbers on a saturday night that is   lol
  • I like your thinking there, made me laugh.  Had loads of thoughts today as I was digging away, about a horrible customer I should never have done work for and lots of spade work through the imaginery head of said customer!  Made me feel much better.

Got lots of calls today in between digging so was thinking of how to get a bluetooth head set that links to my laptop and fills in my appointments diary and then reminds me when I have to meet people.

It is priceless being able to pick and choose who you work for, one perk of being my own boss that I need to take more advantage of!!  I'd have no choice if I worked for someone else.

I've done the corporate, office thing for big bucks in Asia and I really wouldn't go back, I'm far healthier now and have a family that admittedly I should see more of but its my choice.  If I was in Asia, I'd be travelling away from home a lot and wouldn't see them and it would be outwith my control.

    Definitely priceless.
