Never heard of a license being needed to plant trees. I know you can do training, and get a certificate in tree planting, but I'm sure you're quite capable of planting a tree Neil!
Maybe it's a site specific thing, like a CSCS card? I dunno really! Sorry, no help.
Is this private land or a business park environment ?
It may be something they need to look into from their company policy side of things...?
Thanks for prompt replies! I'll post their response in case it affects others in future on these sorts of sites.
Cheers.

Could their be some confusion with needing a felling licence, as the number of trees you mention implies to me the area is about 6-8Acres (3 or so Hectres). That would make the area a small woodland, which you will need Felling licences if you wish to cut any down in future.
There may be some conffusion with grants and Woodland management plans as the number of trees indicates some aid may have been eligible or claimed, and this would mention felling licences.
To me it sounds like conffusion between processes and a felling licence.
Never heard of this either, the only things I can think it may relate to is possibly the Woodland Carbon Code - but this isn't the job of the practitioner and doesn't really require any kind of license.
If its WGS new planting, it may worth giving the local FC conservator a ring to find out.
Don't know if these people could help, but may be worth a bell, as they do know about funding as David Cox mentioned in his earlier post.

Having spoken to boys at GSK they aren't even sure, was just something that someone had brought up and wondered if it had a bearing on this work.
Thanks for replies.

I think in urban areas in the US, a planting permit is required before any new trees are planted - I found a website from New York City which had a 25 page document on tree planting standards which should be followed in order to have a permit to plant - it is a very comprehensive document! Maybe being an international company, they are unaware that the same sort of permit is not necessary in the UK? Just a guess!
I don't think I'm going to go down such an exhaustive route of detailing every possibility and then telling them it doesn't apply. It will suffice on my part to exclude the most obvious, then a nod from woodland trust/fc and I think that will do!!
It certainly has opened up a lot of interesting topics with regards trees and woodland planting. I must say this is one of the most enjoyable and satisfying jobs we have undertaken. I will post some pictures shortly. Job will be finished this week. Just a couple of raptor posts still to put in and jobs a good un.
