Website designs

Websites can be a cheap and easy way to advertise and let customers know what you do. But there are some simple mistakes which can be made that will let you down. One big problem can be the use of colour. Once you have got visitors to your site do you really want to lose them because they have to highlight text to be able to read it? This can be a particular problem with links. If you are using a wysiwyg program then highlight the link and change the colour manually.Fonts are another issue. The more readable your page is without requiring readers to make manual changes to their browsers the more likely you are to get contracts. From developing our newsletter and feedback from residents a good font size is 12, 10 minimum. One thing worth noting, not all font sizes are the same. Font size 10 can have very differnant result depending on what font you are using.Images can make a webpage more pleasant to view, but there are some who turn off images and this can make a huge differrance to how your site your look. I am sure Phil won't mind me using this site as an example. The Banner of the leaves above is nice, appropriate and adds to the viewing pleasure. Turn off images you end up with a white page and yellow header, not a good combination. One reason for turning off images is it loads a page up quicker, if the reader is interested in the images they can be turned back on. Using the alt tag to add a description of your image means the visitor has some information about what the picture is not only encourages those who have turned images off but also those who use screen readers.Headings, try and use these intelligently. Screen readers for blind people use these to allow users to skip through a page to find what they are looking for.Just a few hints to make your websites accessible to more people.

  • Hi Kerry,
I just got a picture, no menu or anything else. Nice picture though!

  • Hi Kerrie

what do you see in the picture, is it a garden or diferent?

    kerry
  • It a garden that has granite planters and a red wall.
  • that project has in the last month, scoped 3 regional awards, an entry in a nationwide circulated brochure (Marshalls PLC), invited 3 day guest at rhs chelsea this year by the sponsors Marshalls, 4/02/09 we travel to Halifax for the national award presentation.... good start to the year .
  • It looks great, well done!
  • thanks , who fabricates your stainless steel?? i recognise this work.
  • The wave and bench were made for me by Andrew Wilson at The Sculpture Workshop. The pool was fabricated by Lister Engineering.
  • As mentioned all you can really see is the garden. There are text boxes but these are not appearing. Nor am I picking them up on the page suggesting it is not just a font colour issue. Probable cause is that the text boxes have been pushed to the background.

It would be a good idea to also look at the meta tags. You have two sets of keywords, I would delete the first set. Also check out the spelling chealsea will not get as much attention as chelsea.

Unusually the source code does not clearly state what program you used to create the page, though there is indication that you are using a program within Microsoft Office - Word?

The coding is incredibly complicated for what is there. I can normally follow code even if I don't fully understand what it is doing, but this seemed a huge mess for a simple page. This can create huge headaches if someone needs to go into the coding to fix a problem. If you have used one of the main programs in Microsoft Office while files can be saved for web publishing they are far from ideal.
  • Emm, and heres me thinking that im on the verge of paying the final installment for this website, having created the master copy of all pages using sketch up, I issued instructions to a web design company, the above will be spoken about and rectified.

    thanks for the enlightment
