Viburnum Leaf beetle

I have a client who has several viburnum tinus and they been affected badly by VLB. I have just being doing manual removal and pruning out the affected leaves, but it is still an on going battle. I know there is not a complete cure, but does anyone use a treatment with a good success rate.

  • Cutting far enough back, removing the green twigs (you can see the wounds full of eggs this time of year) is the most effective method but I've also used soap spray which is reported to be the next best method. Any non specific pesticide just wipes out any potential predators aswell so thats no good. You need to spray regularly to kill the feeding larvae (which do most of the damage), when conditions are suitable.
  • thanks, I have also been using soap spray. it helps with the smell they give off too.
  • I've just sprayed with a general systemic insecticide.... can't remember what offhand........ as soon as I noticed the leaves being eaten...........seemed to do the trick for the season.
  • Try using pyrethrum spray, it's organic so should be still available. Late spring is a good time whilst the larvae are small and haven't got too stuck in!
