treating new sleepers

I have in the past used mainly reclaimed ones for projects as i had a guy that got good quality untreated oak ones but he has stopped getting them in and i am considering using the new tannalized type instead. What would anyone recommend as the best thing to stain them with?

Something like this as featured by Chris Auld in an old post. I hope re-posting the iamge is ok with you Chris.

  • Simon, do you really need to stain them? Natural wood is good. I used pressure-treated new baltic pine sleepers for this school project a couple of years ago and weathering pretty well.

  • I am all for natural timber on show but personally find the pressure treated timber sleepers very ugly and I like the look created in the photo which is natural but not rustic due to the uniform square sawn edges of the new sleepers in comparison to the reclaimed ones.
  • personaly i wouldnt treat the new preasure treated sleapers as they have a nice finish any way, leave it down to the customer unless they require you to do it
  • I use 'Thompsons water seal' for treating timber, its a clear liquid which doesn't alter the colour of the timber. It costs £15 for a 5 litre container and can be sprayed on very easily using a small pump sprayer.

The sleepers in the photo appear new? did you not stain them with something?
  • They are new, they come pre treated but i stain them again so they last longer. It doesn't change the colour though.
