Tools the professionals use

Hiya everyone,

What heavy duty kit do the professionals use??

Specifically:  Secateurs

Plan on adding more to the thread later - but for now, just need secateur recommendations ;-)   )

Thanks in advance for any advice :-)

  • Felco are the main ones most pro will use.

    • Model 2 look pretty standard ??

  • If you've got biggish hands, for everyday use I really rate the gruntek silvercut secateurs. Great quality and good blade considering only £18 from amazon.

Being left-handed though, if I need a finer cut, ie for roses I also have a set of felco left-handed swivel grip secateurs. The swivel grip also really helps the strain on my forearm in fruit tree pruning season.

    • Great - thank you

I use Okatsune, lovely feel, stay sharp and make a very satisfying sound when cutting. Industry standard secateur for professionals in Japan apparently.

  • We use Okatsune too. Fantastic secateurs. Got them from Niwaki.

Felco 2 for herbaceous and general, felco 9 for fine pruning. Used to use the rolley handle ones, they wear out after a couple of years. I buy the right handed pair fine for both hands, I'm ambidextrous.

  • We use Felco and Okatsune.  Different design of course and each have their own fans.  For info, Felco do a really good refurbishment scheme where you can send a pair to them and they fully refurbish for £25.

Wolf garten for hoes , rakes , brushes ,highly recommend their long reach pruner and pruning saw .

Darlac bladed tools saws ,snips ,shears  have proved reliable and robust ,  darlac secateurs have lasted me since 2013 ,still working fine with regular cleaning and sharpening .

Bulldog lawn edging shears . Also bought some burgeon and ball loppers in 2013 with telescopic handles and have proved to be awesome , the work they have done .

A good spade seems hard to find these days ,car boot or antique shops are worth visiting ,my spade was over 50 years old but it literally wore out ,replaced it with an old spear and Jackson never bend picked up for £15 in a junk shop also bought an RHS burgeon and ball transplanting spade cost around £45 and the steel is decent quality .

Every garden fork I have ever owned has lost a tine so can't advise on them .
