My elderly mother is very concerned about the moss on her drive as it is slippery, and looks horrid.

In conversation this evening I said that a power wash would be a good solution but she is convinced that Jayes fluid would be better.

Any thoughts?

    I agree with Paul

I have seen too many ruined drives, paths and patios caused by a too aggressive use of pressure washers.

Even paving can deteriorate eventually as the small surface particles are loosed and blown out. Ironically, as the surface becomes more open it becomes a better anchor for moss.
  • try the jeyes first i believe it is a tar acid and will clear moss quickly if done as directed. It further lightens over the next weeks any darkness as it loosens the dirt.
Jetting will leave awkward lines that almost advertise the fact that you have jetted.

    Kerrie,

I am not saying that you would even try, but never use sulphate of iron on any type of paving or tarmac as it will leave serious rust stains that are nigh on impossible to shift.

  • The surface is tarmac, also elderly and there's lots of it!

Jetting sounds like a complete no no. Didn't realise it made such an impact on tarmac.

Ecochem sounds like a great option, safer than Jayes Fluid which does stink and not very kind to either surrounding plants and her small dog.

Phil, don't know about sulphate of iron but will steer clear.

Thanks guys, now have to tell my Mum that she was right, AGAIN!
  • Thanks for the pointers Nicholas I will give it a go.

Looks like it is going to be quite hard work, "scraper, hoe, shovel or other suitable tool, then Sweep it all away" - there really is LOTS of tarmac!
