Swapping Hayter 56 engines over

It's raining and have a few spare hours so I am thinking of swapping over the engines on two Hayter 56 341A machines to make at least one good one.

Whilst I can see three engine bolts and of course the blade and then cables to disconnect, I have a query regarding the friction disc.

Does the friction disc just has to be tapped off or should the woodruff key need to be removed first? I suspect the woodruff key needs to come out but looking at the engine I am not too sure.

If anyone has done this before I would greatly appreciate some guidance.

Thanks

  • Just take the bolt out - then technically you need a puller although this can be created out of a large thick flat plate and some bolts.

Be warned, the friction disc can be either fairly loose or bl##dy tight - I have ended up sawing cranks off or cutting through the disc boss to get them off....

    Don't loose the woodruff key!

  • Thanks Adam,

A good soak with WD40 and a few good tugs and off they both came.  Engines swapped over and after three pulls off she went.  I know have another 56 with hopefully another year or two working life left in it.

  • Glad to hear it all went OK Graeme! I converted my Hayterette to friction disc and 19" solid blade following rust related failure of the swinging blade 'pan'. That resisted hammers, WD40, a proper Hayter puller, swearing and the gas torch till I finally won after I battled with it for 20 minutes with my angle grinder and cut the blade boss to bits!

Incidentally I have a old shape, full width discharge, belt drive good condition Hayter 56 for sale if anyone is interested?
