Sticky notes

Hi everyone i have been doing some research into new advertising for my business and came across sticky notes not something i would usually use but for the application in which i intend to stick on customers front doors as a quick call to action, i thought would be a great idea, it would be interesting to know whether this method is currently used for our line of business and what success rate is has over conventional forms of advertising.

Mmmmm, not 100% sure I'd want someone sticking something to my front door.

Realise it is tough to gain new customers but I think people are getting better at ignoring marketing messages that 'disrupt' them, look at how people dodge through the adverts when watching TV programmes they've recorded.

Maybe try a quick search on 'marketing' via the search box in the top right hand corner of the site to see what other methods people have been using.

  • Although it's great you're trying to think of something different, beyond the standard leaflet approach, I agree with Craig, in that people, generally-speaking, would find it intrusive and irritating having a note stuck to their front door. Similar in a way to the leaflet stuck under the car windscreen wiper, or the Big Issue thrust into your face.

Sort of crosses the line, sticky notes are something that would be OK should a friend, neighbour or family member post on your door, but not an unknown tradesman.

Rather than stick a post-it on the door, knock on it, and ask them the question directly? When asked politely, I don't think many people would find the approach intrusive or irritating at all, some would even welcome it. Funnily enough.

You might try getting that printed onto magnets (we send them inside Christmas cards to clients - you would be amazed how many keep them and stick them onto their fridges!)

We got our done at Vistaprint.

  • The area i live in is a no cold calling zone meaning no door knocking and with it being a retiment area alot of people tend to be out i spoke to a parcel delivery company who leave the sticky notes on doors for missed deliveries, so local people would check them to see what it said ?

I think there is a big difference between the delivery company stickers, something that people are expecting, and yours which people may find intrusive.

I wonder if it being a retirement area there are any social groups that meet up, maybe you could offer a 'guide to gardening for older people' and in that hour or so you'll have a captive audience.

It is something that you could even do on a seasonal basis and whilst people may be able to do smaller jobs around the garden, who do you think they are likely to contact about more challenging tasks?

  • I'm afraid I would put such a note in the bin!
Social groups/womens institute are a good idea.
Also, are there any local directories; retired people tend to look for trades people in there - it is our best form of advertising.

  • It may just be me but i have notice more british companies adopting american advertising methods and using them to great effect, for instance the door hangers have been used locally by a restaurant who handed out over 500 and saw a 35% return within the first week, as for local groups i work full time i am simply trying to increase my volume of work with minimal outlay and downtime, so i can expand my company, i personally thing staying ahead of my competition by using a mixture of tradition and (radical) methods can be used to great effect.

The stocky note design is an new design i was looking into the reason for the change in wording is a clear call to action with a price area so a customer already has a clear idea of the price for the lawn cut, which would give me a clear indication if the customer is serious about the job not just looking for quotes. ?

  • Never any harm in giving anything a go; some will like it; some won't and as long as it pays for itself then you're ahead. It's not something I would consider as a customer but I'm a bit of an old traditionalist :)

  • I'd be worried about advertising the fact that there's no-one home! So for me it could be a security issue for the house-holder. Sorry to be paranoid, but leaving a note on the door as kids was a real no-no for that reason!
  • hi christine of down to earth gardening here how do you do the sticky note
