Spring fert suggestions

Hi. Thinking ahead to spring. What are peoples reccomendations for slow release spring granular fertilisers?  I'm looking around for best value with a nitrogen content of around 18. So not to high as I don't want the grass growing to quickly.  Thanks

  • Gary,

We have used for several years an equine fertiliser  called  Top Paddock 10-8-11 plus mg and sulphur.

It's an organic based slow release fertiliser,  from memory a 20kg bag does around 450 sq Mt's to 600 sq Mt's we were paying £12.50 Inc vat last year, but the best price at the moment is around £26 Inc vat.

We use it throughout the season spring, summer and autumn.

It outperforms mineral based fertiliser on all levels including price per square metre,  there's no surge of growth just a steady manageable growth with  the sward maintaining good colour for up to 12 weeks. All our treated lawns stayed green through last years heat and drought  with no water inputs and very little burning, our weekly mowing regime carried on as normal.

No doubt there will be comments from other contributors saying- it's not a proper lawn fertiliser but the results and feedback from some very  high end clients would contradict. We wouldn't use any other product and it makes us a good margin as well happy customers!

    • Thanks Peter. I really appreciate your input. I like the sound of that. I especially like that it's organic. With it being organic is there less of a risk of scorching?  10.8.11 seems an odd mix for a spring fert. But if you've had proven results with it then it definitely worth considering. Thanks again. Gary

      • Gary,

Yes it will scorch . As to the mix , we treat over 30,000 sq Mt's a year and have never experienced any issues whatsoever.  As mentioned the product kept lawns green in last years drought which speaks volumes!

        • Absolutely!  Thanks again Peter.

  • We use Amvista G0 Kickstart fertiliser, 10-4-4+4MgO+8CaO+3Fe+Seaweed

We get it from ProGreen. It's the best we've used for giving good, lush growth without the grass growing too quickly. It's £30 for 20kg.

    • Thanks PGM much appreciated
