Side discharge?

Can anyone explain to me why and how they use a side discharge mower?Does it leave a mound of grass parallel to where you cut? Do you need to rake up the grass when using a machine like this? Say it's a big residential site; is a side discharge machine suitable?Never used or seen one used before (living in a box!).Thanks

  • why ? to cut grass (rough maybe) lots of ride-ons are side discharge.

how ? so it shoots cuttings away from you -(as opposed to behind mower) use it starting from one end so as it leaves a line of cuttings along one side . ie then move over to mow next to it. etc etc

it saves having a box filling up quickly and saves emptying /disposing of cuttings in a pile.

not suitable for domestic lawns unless its a recycling mower(mulches cuttings up fine/mulching blades)
dont leave cuttings unless its a proper mulcher as it wont break down to nourish the lawn)
  • Do you think it would be a suitable machine to use for residential amenity grass areas?

Depends on what sort of finish they require, do they want stripes if so limited to choice as most commercial mowers do not produce a striped finish, I found out about this morning that Kubota have now added a roller as an option for some of their range.

  • No stripes required, just C2 standard amenity lawn
