I did this over 20 years ago & no regrets. There is a lot of cheap competition but a lack of professionals. I got started by literally walking around, spotting gardens that needed TLC & then putting a personalised letter through the door.

Thanks for the info, thats a good idea to get started and something I hadn't considered. I don't want to go down the whole "going rate" debate but how would you say rates in the rural east of Ireland compare to the south of England where say I charge £25/30 an hour?
I can't help you regarding hourly rates as I avoid them like the plague. Just as in the UK the going rate depends hugely on location. I made a point of avoiding the general gardening jobs like mowing. Remember that you can use the internet, phone etc to suss out the services & costs in the area.
Yeah fair enough, I've read enough not to charge hourly rates to customers but thought it would be handy to use as a comparision. |I have found the pricing to be trickiest to work out so far but maybe I haven't been looking hard enough in the right places. Where are you based out of interest?
