Suggest you consider SmartWater or SelectDNA as part of your strategy - The key is visibly mark your item in one place using a warning sticker say item is marked by one the above solutions and then you use that solution to mark items that can not be easily replaced, engine casings, integrated handles etc.
We were advised with that strategy, if it still gets stolen it will be harder to dispose off and if recovered Polices forces have access to detection solutions.
with regards to the soldering etc on new equipment i would contact dealer / manufacturer to check this out.
from my point of view i always tell the people that its best to get smartwater etc, scribing on tools is fine but it can still be heated off so if found it would still never make its way back to you.
its another thing thats good also with the pellenc batterys because the serial number is on a nice sticker but also programed into the main board and battery board, so if its recoverd i could do a download on it and find the number that way (got to love tech)
also your first point with the cable
i would go for a couple not 1 long length as it would take ages to get that tool you need right in the middle of the line and put it back after, atleast with 2 maybe 3 you can then sort tools into most used and ones for the odd job in the day so most jobs your only un locking 1 line for the few tools you need
I never leave tools in my van overnight, if you do you are asking for trouble.
they are not insured by many overnight - 8pm -8 am
Silly thing to say on a public forum sorry.
It is a pain, at the end of the day you just wanna get in and turn LJN on but 10 mins putting tools inside, i only speak of this as my van was broken into, 3k worth of tools gone, most of the time i leave my van open, if they can start it they can have it, if they brake a window it is a pain in the a..e.
i went out at 2am last night to lock my few tools in my alarmed /secure brick garage...... i also drove round as a few skallys were walking past ......... i heard a local gangster is back out of jail here (my blower was stolen in london btw), i think he stole my trailer , and im sure he stole my kit £900 smashed out from my jeep 2 years ago. next time ill smash him !

at the end of the day if they want it they will find away, but anything you can do to make it harder for them cant be a bad thing and it will stop the guys who run/drive past and chance it
