Going "pro" on ljn is one for a start. Back links to other web sites is a must also. I only advertise on the web so that and WOM is where my customers find us.
  • Thanks for your reply Brian, as its still early days here for me and i have very little on im try to optimize my spare time and research this subject.without the benefit of years of building a client base i have very little to do as yet this time of year. As im sure joinging LJN as a pro member will help me funds are limited at present and pros nd cons have to be weighed up before i make a decision ... thank you for all your input.

  • all I know is that google is all over the place at the moment resent updates have thrown my memorial site up and down like a yoyo its nuts our seo dont seem too be able too pin down why its a dark art indeed

  • My seo seems to be stable even with the recent updates and my SEO company (Net66) have made me aware of the recent updates but it hasn't affected my business. Still position 2 for gardeners London.

  • Hi James

You've made a good start with LJ, If funds are a bit thin this time of year then Facebook and twitter are a great ways to start. There are also loads of free sites on the Internet you could advertise from like yell.

I mean who doesn't have a Facebook account.

  • Some brilliant advice flooding in here and its most appreciated so thank you all for contributing. As i have been reading on this subject i have found lots of conflicting advise as to what works and what doesnt. With apparnt constant changes to the algorythms and ways in which the main search engines select the wheat from the chaff is link building still the number one rule to building SEO? The more i think about it the more my head hurts ;) Does the joining of twitter, linkedin, facebook etc make a dramatic difference to seo or does seo naturally progress as your business grows in popularity.
Please keep contributing as i think this subject is something that many people may be confused with yet seemingly a essential part of business these days ;)

Recently we've been looking at getting a new website, as our business name has changed & the focus of what we offer.

Not having a Smartphone, I can only guess at their usefulness, but I understand more people now look at websites with smartphones or tablets than with a 'traditional' desktop.

We have been quoted £2000 for a Drupal site, & yesterday someone introduced the idea of a responsive website. Designed to look good on any device.
Naturally costs more, but overcomes the need to have separate sites to suit different devices. Apparently 'google' frowns on 2 sites for SEO purposes.

Has anyone had a 'responsive site' made, or any thoughts on this?

You can check out the appearance of a responsive site by altering the size of your browser window

which means to see all of the content, you need to scroll back & forth & magnify in & out.

Has anyone thought about getting a 'responsive site'?

  • Your links not working! in your post. On the topic of SEO for us you have to make sure your key business keywords are correctly on your home page. Chainsaw Saw Horse is our core business and we have worked hard to get it into the title and on the page. This gives Google the best chance of "understanding" what our site is about.

Happy to share anything with the members. We are 3rd BTW for "Chainsaw Saw horse"
Truncator - Chainsaw Saw Horse <- This is a link to our site with the keywords in. This is also the type of link you want from sites like this to really get you going in the rankings! Hope this helps

  • For responsive websites we are builig a new on at the moment for us based on Foundation http://foundation.zurb.com/ it's a great framework to hang your site off. Does all the work for you
