Sciatica

About 4 years ago I suffered from a severe case of whats more commonly known as an occupational hazard, sciatica.I'm fully aware about what I'm about to write next and I've no idea of what women have to go through to give birth, so my pain was just man flu compared to you mothers who read my words. So I look for no sympathy.I couldn't walk, my left calf was dancing with sporadic twitches, from the base of my spine, down through my left buttock and down the rear of my left leg to my calf, my testicles felt like I'd had a proper volley and with finished with toe tingling. No end of pink horse tablets later the pain finally left me.Is there a natural remedy that any member has first hand knowledge of.Has any one else suffered from this condition?Put me out of action for 6 weeks,

  • I have suffered from this for about 5 to 6 years. I have found going to the osteopaths helps a great deal with dealing with the pain and bringing it down to an acceptable level where I can function fairly normal.

On one ocassion I did collapse in the street with it. I had a sudden pain shoot down my left leg as if someone had poured liquid fire down it. I did get 6 months of absolutely no pain before it all started to kick in again.

It is good to hear that it can go as I've more or less resigned myself to living with some level of pain .
  • 5-6 years, my goodness that bad.

i do get twiches and twinges but nothing compared to the initail 4 weeks of Sciatica

can you remember excactly what triggered the initial "pop"

With out trying to be smart or crude mine was flared by straining my bowels first thing in the morning.

I've suffered with it on and off for fifteen years. Mine was initially caused by one of the disks bulging in my lower back due to cycling a lot (500 miles plus per week) with bad posture. This led to the nerve rubbing and becoming damaged.

I spent literally hundreds of pounds on physio and still had problems.

Last year I had physio on the NHS and instead of plugging me into machines they gave me a simple set of excercises to manage and strengthen the nerve.

Doing my streches morning and evening is now a part of my daily routine.

It has really made a difference (moved roughly 3 tons of stone yesterday and my back was fine) and given me my life back.
  • I suffered Sciatica terribly and had to adjust how I worked, but I found doing exercise and keeping your back strenghened and flexible is the best way, I did Judo at the time ( I know I know ) but my back was at it's best but pilatis(spelling wrong) would be good inner core muscles or yoga.

When I was pregnant well hormones just made my back a disaster zone and pelvis just fell apart I'm sure.

    You have my sympathy
  • Kerry, I'm also a sufferer. There was a discussion on this a short while ago. Lots of varying advice.

  • After seeking advise from a Chiropractor one occasion and a rather expensive rub down that did very little for me, I did however take in the words, "strengthen your core and pilates"

I haven't and don't intend to go to a keep fit class but I'm conscious of how I work my stomach muscles when working heavily with in any garden.

At 41 I do have a 4 pack and aim to keep in trim for as long as possible.
  • Hi Kerry

I get it now and again especially after a hard shift digging or moving lots of soil - my sisters a physio so makes it easier for me to get treatment! She gave me some exercises to do to get rid of it - step back with worst foot behind you and lean back into the soreness and keep doing this every so often. This is what I do and it works - " its not medical advice so don't follow it" disclaimer and all that!

Go see a physio who'll give you stuff to do. personally I don't believe in drugs for this - its only treating the pain and not the cause.

Now after a hard day I do stretches - not in clients garden, although they might pay me not to do them, but in the safety of my own house! It is exercise we're doing day in day out so I just apply same rules to work as the gym!
  • Hi Kerry

You have my sympathy. Its painfull when you get a major spazum! Only eva had 1 but I'm sure bing young helpd as after a couple of days I was ok. I just have to keep my lower back and bum warm. A guy I works with has acupuncture every so offten and aparentlly that helps loads.especialy if he's going to be siting for a long wile such as flying.
  • I also had this many years ago and you can recover well and stop it from happening again. The first thing to remember, is that you've had a warning telling you, that what ever you lifted, carried, picked up or stretched for was wrong. You really have to remember how to do these things safely and a simple Manual Handling course will really help. Sorry to sound like a Health and Safety guy but it works.
  • ''pain management'' course near paul somewhere my dad went to years ago on Nhs.

'acupuncture' my mum ( yoga teacher , health expert, vege, nutritionalist, pilates, hairdresser, studying philosophy now' ) swears and tells me all the time : ''Acupuncture'' , ive had bad neck for 22yrs !

i have ''trigger finger'' now , possible carpel-tunnel (hoping to avoid it), waiting for specialist again...........

luckily after hearing/seeing my dad's pain for 25 odd years , i wouldnt wish it on anyone....(im ultra careful?)
He once (at a party , leaned against an AGA for , i guess a while ) unknown to him........not sure exactly of his story , but basically i think something started to burn !!!!!!!

do you drive an 'automatic' ? i think this helps major. clutches are strenuous continually.....
