Schedule

Evening all, I am taking my gardening buisness to full time starting this spring, last year I did all my lawns over two days (approx 40) later returning to some of these property's I mow at a later date to weed and do hedges... as I didn't have enough time working two jobs.

Just wondering would you think it would be better to mow the lawns and perform all other jobs at one property then move to the next...?

Also when do you start planning the diary, I'm trying to get my head around putting the people's names in for mowing but should I wait until spring before doing this???

Just trying to get organised before the busy period ahead!!!

Everything is in the diary now and the rest is in my head once a routine gets ingrained into my brain.

At the very start i literally had a very simple jobs grid i did on excel and printed out the copy and filled it in by hand when planning.

5 boxes across Monday - Friday ( the day boxes i then later split down by hours) Week 1

5 boxes below across Monday - Friday Week 2

It worked for my weekly visits and was clear to see where fortnighlys would fit. Leaves Friday for all the other jobs and extras or monthly visits and bigger mowing. It suits me but wouldnt suit everyone.

It was a very simple tool but then I got technical and started to put in charges so had ideas of what I could be earning each day/week etc then miles..... but initially a Green Day marked as some of the fortnightly i planned to visit the days leading up to their green bin visit so I could atleast ensure it was full and by their gate for collection.

    • Cheers for that Jonathan, I just filled in some of the diary Monday to Friday as you mentioned but I might print something out next week to go at... Was easy banging all the lawns off but I'm thinking now , may be better to spread the jobs incase one day is insane weather, do you cut lawns and weed etc at same property on same days?

Do u charge per lawn or hourly. I charge £20 per cut to £45. I try to do one day of speed mowing me mow my lad strim edge blow. On this day I have few tools BBC and take away a lot of waste  Another day upto 20-60 mins at £1 per minute so £20 min to £60 for an hour which seems a little expensive to Some but you do get a lot done, spray or hedge trim or hoe or general tidy up. On this day I take more kit to do more odd jobs but generally leave waste in green bins. Try keep Mondays free as bank holiday Mondays mess your schedule. Some clients request a Friday slot so lawn has the fresh look for weekend get togethers. The more u can get done with less travel the better. I'll be booking my Wednesday mow days in early feb to commence first week of March and avoid leaving to March when potentially people want to dictate days and mess up your plans

good luck going full time and wish u well

        • Cheers Luke, I charge per lawn anything from £10 to £50 I don't take waste away from any of my lawns but I operated similar to you last year, did as many as possible with someone else helping me last year but feel like this year I'm going to attempt it solo..

I didn't think about bank holidays tbh, I'll probably be working them as not working Saturdays!!!

          Thankyou

Yeah, work bank holidays If necessary and the working conditions good as there is always the option to take the day off in the winter instead!

If it's a property where Im due to mow and weed or do other tasks then yes I always do all that at the same time. At some places I don't mow as there is no need to and at others I only mow... so it's a bit of a mixed bag. Most people understand there may be the occasional wet mow where it needs doing and the conditions are not ideal so it doesn't look perfect at the end but fingers crosssed the next visit will be drier! And it normally works out dry

        • AHH cheers Jonathan I think I'll be going with that then, complete all tasks that need doing at that property, regardless of weather...good luck

          Soon be spring 😊

certainly thats what we do... one hit per client. Though if its wet (or flooded as many are around here at the mo) we swap clients around

Are you at full capacity now for this year or have you allowed some wiggle room for taking on new opportunities when silly season starts ?

I think you may have to re visit your decision to go solo if things become manic , Its sometimes very difficult to say no to new opportunities unless you have back up at short notice .

However you come across as extremely resourceful and will find a way .

            good luck .( :
