Scarifier/Lawn rake recommendations?

G'day all, hope you are all keeping safe from the storm! I have a customer (mowing and hedges normally) that requires their lawn scarifying. It isnt something I want to do professionally (I've done my time at this) and she has been let down by her Lawn Treatment guy. Somehow he feels that it isnt his job! He just likes to push a spreader or spray the grass with ferrous sulphate once a year.  I felt obliged to help and she showed me an electric flymo lawn rake which is fortunately broken. She has asked me to recommend a machine, it will only be used once or twice a year. It is a huge lawn but not particularly mossy so if anyone can think of a fairly easy to handle domestic petrol machine, I'll tell her. I just know I'm going to end up doing the job and if so, I won't be going too deep. Thanks All.

  • The Stihl RL 540 around £550, great machine, previously recommended on here by others, the Toro at £499 with interchangeable cassettes which are a bit plasticky are ok. At the budget end Einhell from Tool Station around £300. Or hire ?

Agree that the stihl is a good machine though mine is in the Viking colours but same machine.

  • Just read the reviews for Einhell, think the hell is appropriate stick with the Toro or Stihl!!

The Stihl/Viking one does a good job for the price, but the bag is just pathetic so I just leave it rear discharge and then blow and rake up the debris.

  • I bought a Eliet scarifier, second hand back in 2020 for £250 after my trusty Allen Turf Doctor, bought back in 2014, for a paltry £100, broke the bearings. The Eliet is a professional machine and highly manoureable.

For occasional use, I would go for a quality second hand one and 'hire' the machine out for £55 which is what I do for my customers. That machine paid for iteself  in the first week as I used it 6 times. Now, every time I hire it, it paid for itself.

  • Just looking around as I have an Ein-hell, it's done okay for me but I thinks it's time to move up a gear. The Stihl doesn't have a very wide cut. Has anybody any experience of the Stiga SVP40?

Around £60 cheaper than the Stihl. All of my clients are domestic although a couple of very large lawns.

    Cheers Neil

  • Thanks for the comments. My customer has now texted saying she will probably order a Hyundai 212. I've not heard of them before.  It's about £350 I believe, so on a par with the Einhell. this customer has two large lawns although, fortunately not much moss.  It looks like I'll be doing the work! I vowed never again some years ago but it should only be once a year and if I get it done in March when not too busy on the grasscutting, it wont be so bad!
