Well at last, I have finally done the deed, my company officially ceased trading on 31st March. It's been a long haul (46 years) but I dont regret for one minute, packing up a cosy job in the City to help out a local landscaper during the Summer of '72. The idea was that as the autumn came along, I would leave and get myself a 'proper job' back in a nice cosy office. Well that didnt work, it was much more fun working outside, but in 1976, work began to slow, my boss lost interest and I started on my own.
We started with two of us, which became 3, then 4 and occasionally 5 but I found a level that I (and the company) was comfortable with, at a regular 4 guys - two on Landscaping and two on garden maintenance. The two sections toothed in well, which enabled us to be more flexible and meet deadlines.
I have enjoyed popping up on this site occasionally and help when I can. There is always some great help and advice (some not so!), but overall, with the mix of replies, the poster can gleen some useful information.
I'll still pop in occasionally and chuck in my two-pennyworth, as I can trace most of the recurring problems back to when we started all that time ago. What I will say is that not everyone is cut out to run a succesful business, but there is a place for all, be it as a one man band or a muli employer. Don't expect to get mega rich, but it's a great way to earn a living.........and it's not even a 'proper job'!
