Rescued Lawn

Hi all,You may remember me adding a discussion about a customer's lawn that was in desperate need of help - I was considering 'slitting' or 'splitting' (not sure what the proper term was) to aerate it. I ended up aerating with a combination of rolling type aerater and garden fork, it wasn't a huge lawn and took about 3.5 hours to aerate. I dug out a square of lawn and it was solidly compacted after about 2 inches, it felt like hitting bricks trying to get the garden fork in. I perservered and made sure the fork went through the compacted layer, gave it a thorough soaking, top dressed and seeded. Have attached some photos, massive difference in just 2 weeks.

  • Excellent job. You have demonstrated why a proper gardener is worth a lot more the £10ph. I've had a few clients biting their lips at the prospect of having their lawn re-turfed. I tell them to give me a month and see what happens.
  • Hi Cesare

I only charge £12 per hour, think maybe I should put my prices up a bit! I work on my own and do general garden maintenance/planting/lawns etc. Like you said, I tend to give it a month and start with the less expensive options - aerating, seeding, top dressing etc. Customers tend not to go for re-turfing because of the cost.

  • £12ph is cheap! It depends on which part of the country you opperate in but in West London I base my maintence quotes at between £20 and £30 ph. This includes diposal of the average amount of waste I can expect and the use of the average amount of fertilizers and weed killers. It also takes in to account travelling time. However, I do have to add that London is very expensive to do business in and it can take ages to get anywhere. I have heard of gardeners charging up to £50ph to work in town.

  • I'm in North West England right on the coast, north of Liverpool. I think the average around here is about £15 per hour. I have virtually no travelling time as all of my regular customers are local. I will get rid of some rubbish but most tends to end up in green wheelie bins.

  • As Cesare mentioned so much depends on where one works. We operate in what is euphemistically know as the Surrey stockbroker belt and charge a fixed price for the job never an hourly rate. This equates to a minimum of £30 ph+. That said cost of living here is on a par with central London.
  • Hi Roy

Living and working in the North, obviously rates are a lot less than the south east. All of my customers are regulars and are happy with me doing 1 or 2 hours a week for £12 hour. I'm happy with that for now, am considering studying for the RHS Level 2 certificate - may put rates up a bit if I pass it. :)
