Reducing the height of hedges - any advice?

Hi guys, now here's something I am forever asked for by customers but not sure of the correct way (and safe way) to do it......here's one I cannot seem to find an answer for anywhere on the net...How do I cut say 12" off a privet hedge, bearing in mind I work alone and I do not fancy the chain saw and ladder approach (I value my limbs quite highly lol!).I have a multi-function ladder that I use as a hedge cutting platform.Any advice or ways you guys do it would be really appreciated!!Many thanks,Steven

    Hi,

    This summer I reduced a 60ft privet by 5ft.

I used my trusty hedgemaster steps, a petrol hedge cutter (Stihl HS80),a pair of loppers for the meaty bits and a pole pruner for the bits out of reach -the hedge was 8ft deep in places.

The job was done safely and quickly with no dramas. I'd avoid the chainsaw and ladder route at all costs as they don't mix and its bound to end in tears.

The only caveat I would add is to ensure that if you are cutting through quite a bit of old growth is to make sure that you prune at the correct time of year for the hedge species.
  • Hi there

There is no problems about cutting Privet so far back into hard wood & I would recommend that you do so. Cut back to beyond 12" & allow the new growth to rapidly grow to your clients required height. Also strap a long scaffold board horizontaly to the end of the ladder to spread the weight, this will prevent you diving through the middle of the hedge.

  • combi-system hedge cutters..............loppers,loppers.loppers : aluminium 7 steps and staff !!
  • Had few customers with high hedge about 4 metres or more-

The hedge was cut 2-3 times a year but the top was cut once a year - about 1 metre yes a good loppers - prefer one that you can adjust it's length.

    Good luck mate.
