Pricing up for Scarifying

Ive been having a few calls recently for moss killing and scarifying work. Ive done it before so know what it entails but ive never priced it (the firm i worked for did). Does anyone use a base price e.g per square metre?The scarifier is £50 for the week and moss killer £40 for 500 square metres-ish coverage.Any help would be muchly appreciated, thanks!

    To be honest I didnt look too much into it just googled moss killer and up popped this one. Where about do you get your soluble Iron from? Does it work for weeds aswell or will it only target moss?

    I pay £50 per week (including delivery and collection from yard) for Tracmaster scarifier. Seems to be very good value to me, no deposit needed and an excellent business to deal with if in Bucks/Berks/Herts. http://www.d-stoolhire.co.uk/

    In fact i could not recommend D and S tool Hire enough!
  • Thanks for the link. It says that this is a moss detterant, will it kill the moss that is already there? Good value too, might aswell go for the 25kg bag

  • i just ordered a 25kg bag of FERROUS SULPHATE for £18.52 inc p&p from http://www.bshamenity.com
  • We tend to price it up on area in lumps of 100m squared but if someone has a large area they might not pay quite so much per 100m than someone with only a small area, depends what is in the price, if your taking the waste away and scarifying can produce a lot of waste then that has to be more than a job where you leave it. I find people realise it is a specialist operation and as such you can charge a bit more.

    • Cheers guys for all the info, after literally hours infront of this computer I think I've got a price in my head.

      For the scarifier I will charge £40 per day and break it up over the jobs for that day per hour.

      For moss killer, seed and feed I've worked it out at 75p per square metre.

      So as a ball park figure for 100m squared...

      0.75 x 100 = £75
      scarifier = £20
      3.5 hours labour = £55

      Total = £150

      does this sound about right what everyone else would charge or am I way off the mark??

  • I buy soluble ferrous sulphate at £40 for enough to cover 4500m2, so the raw element to do 100m2 costs about £1. Aitkens in Glasgow.
  • Firstly, double check your grass seed prices.
    unless doing deep scarification I would suggest top dressing the lawn afterwards - this will also act as a seed bed for the grass and also aid germination.

    What would you do if you can't get anymore scarification jobs?

    Personally and it is all down to what your location would support, charge out at:

    Moss treatment £50 to £75
    Scarification (hire charge plus labour) £100 - £125
    Top dressing and re-seeding £100 - £200 depending upon your cost to get the materials

    Also seriously consider feeding the lawn as part of the top dressing stage as this will help the lawn recover from the stress and also aid recovery etc.

    Have you included waste disposal charges? Nothing to suggest you have unless you are leaving green waste on site?

    Basically double your price. You have at least two visits, you need to pick up the hire equipment, topdressing, seeds etc - all time and money. You would probably want to offer a follow up visit a week or two after re-seeding to check on progress. It all adds up.
