Planting up loads of large planters

I have been asked to do a quote which involves the planting and care of around 75 large (1x2m) planter troughs. They currently have a variety of climbers, small shrubs and sparse annuals in them at present, but it would be my job to improve on this.I haven't done this before so has anyone got any pointers? I don't want to spend too much time/cost on this, just get a satisfactory job at a price the client wants to pay. Around 200 flats will be sharing the cost. This could amount to a LOT of plants if done as thoroughly as it could be! My instincts are to purchase perhaps 6-8 nice colourful plants for each, plant them up in a random way, plus prune and weed whatever else is already there. Then, come autumn, take out the dead annuals, plant bulbs and ensure the perennials look good. How does that sound? Thanks

  • Bulbs are a good idea. Have you checked out what Craigmarloch nurseries have in stock their prices are usually quite good and I'm sure they have 'growing' bulbs at this time of year.
  • Yep, I'd definitely go for the bulb option, and Colin's suggestions are spot-on, so you just predominately plant bulbs but for all-year interest. Maybe some other perennials as well and an evergreen shrub or two for winter (skimmia/sarococca eg). You could get a few browny points in their eyes, 'cos next year the cost will be cheaper for them as you won't need to buy lots of additional plants, which with purely annuals would be the case.
Good luck with - show us the piccies when they're done
