Pimping up the Van !

We've had a factory fitted radio/CD player go kaput in one of the vans last week. We were doing a bit of running about today and popped into local dealer to get a replacement price.

After picking ourselves up of the floor (£300+) PLUS fitting ! We disappeared, looked online and went to a local Halfords.

We picked up a Sony radio/CD with MP3 connection for £50.99 + a £5 discount voucher !. A new facia plate for a couple of quid and we fitted it straight away back at yard.

It's a techno van now, with flashing / pulsing lights on the radio fascia - JP would be proud.

As they say, How do they do that? ...~£50 and the 'sounds' are good for a van !

  • Cool...first thing I did to my old bus was buy a Sony CD head unit an replace the front speakers and add some rear ones too, I've also plumbed in a DAB radio and arial so now have Planet Rock on the go !

Cool - how good are in-car DAB's ? - is that an 'adapter' or a complete DAB system ?

I want to get Virgin Rock & Virgin 80's playing loud to counter the horrible din I have to put up with with XFM etc from my guys ;-)

  • It's a Pure Highway...the way to make it work (well for me) is...

I put a power cord into the central glove box on the Hiace and ran the arial lead there too so I didn't have to use there silly window sucker that just screams nick me, the external arial is a  mag mount on the roof, zip tied the lead to the roof rack and the cable comes in through the door rubber and under the dash, using an external arial is one of the key factors to making DAB work, the other with the Highway is to use an Aux lead to connect to your head unit direct that way you don't loose the digital quality of the broadcast..

End result hardly drops a signal ever, certainly better reception than FM...sounds as good or better than a CD playing direct, I'm well chuffed, a dedicated head unit would save some wiring but this is the cheapest way to do it and the results are good, if you use the internal arial and FM connection to the head unit with the Pure Highway you are almost guaranteed dissapoinment.

  • First thing i did when i got my van was to junk the original radio/cass unit and replace it with a spare radio/cd player i had from a previous car. The sound improved markedly even with the crap speakers, but these were also changed a week later for new examples and the sound was better still, not great as the doors only have cut outs for small speakers, bit tinny but still much better than the old originals.

With most of my cars in the past, i have always replaced the standard head unit and straight away sound quality improves, if you can then be arsed to change the speakers, all the better ;-)
