I took delivery of 120 metres of the stuff today from a company who i'll name once i've spoken to them tomorrow to see what they are going to do about the problems with it.

i have 12 turf that i can't possibly lay and a whole bunch of others with bits missing and the soil scalped off the roots of the grass.

all in all, it is the worst turf i have ever had, i'm not even convinced it really is medallion, although that is what I have paid for.

I have never been impressed with Rolawn, but it's usually been fine when i've been forced to use it.

What are your experiences with Rolawn?

  • I have been laying some rolawn medallion lately and found it to be quite poor the grass is thin there's not body to the sward and the thickness of the rolls is questionable, in my opinion way to thin it dries out way to quickly, its a real shame for a truly british company to supply such poor quality rolls of turf.

  • this was my impression also pretty much, it's around £1/msq more expensive than my usual stuff especially once delivery is added (my usual people delivery for 'free')

they have always been trying to get the thinnest turf to reduce the amount of soil they export from fields & the amount of haulage expense they incur, but you can go too far......

lots of people remember when they incorporated green mesh into the turf to hold it together - i still find some even now and that was maybe 20/25 years ago they were doing it

the supplier (a Rolawn platinum partner) is to their credit is sorting the problem out

  • The mesh is one of my pet hates. Once it comes up to the top, or is caught at the edge, it's a nightmare. I was trying to put people off it 20 years ago!

  • yeah, it was a really thick idea.

update - they replaced 12 turves - the replacements were no better.

the result, i will write to Rolawn and London lawn Turf Co. and tell them both exactly what i think of their product and why i will never (and i do mean never) use their product again.

that's two companies i've blacklisted in 3 months. i'm going to have to watch myself or i'll have no suppliers left ;)

  • PRO
We use InTurf. Have always been happy with the quality and price.
  • i think i'm right in saying that my turf usually comes from Paynes in Essex, quality is always good.

then inturf website looks pretty good and they supply homebase, so it's gotta be pretty good stuff for their buyers to go with it.

  • I was visiting my local London Turf outlet on Friday getting their topdressing and a landscaper was saying how poor the turf was and he was refusing to use it and wanted to return it and I could see why!!

I did mention to the manager that this wasn't the first time I have heard bad feedback and he did say that Rolawn have warned them about 8 weeks back that the quality would be poor due to the winter and spring weather conditions.

To be honest, in the past I have always found their turf to be excellent but since 2011 it hasn't been to their usual high standard and doesn't justify the premium price.

Inturf or Qlawns every time for me.

  • I stopped using Rolawn turf around 12 months ago now and have switched to Spearhead. I know that 3 of the largest turf suppliers down here in cornwall have also stopped selling Rolawn products. The quality has really gone downhill over the last couple of years.

  • we've used Payne's and a local grower for years. If there's ever a problem then they forewarn us, and to be fair whenever we have had problems with nitrogen burns on the grass etc.(very rarely), they have replaced it all without quibbling. Always been good quality

  • I have also stopped using Rolawn for the same reasons, very thin and poor quality. One opinion I heard was that they are cutting it thinner to make each roll lighter and they can get more on a pallet/ get more on a wagon and save on delivery etc.
