New Starter

Hi Guys

New starter here, I've managed to find two days work maintaining one garden, and look set to obtain another days work local to these. Word of mouth.

I am looking for any kind of advice, I've looked into insurance, weighing up caged trailer or van, uniforms, a boards, I've got equipment already but I know I will need to upgrade at some stage, bought the Gardening Business by Paul Power.

I friend mentioned talking to the local pubs as he couldn't get someone to maintain his gardens.

I'm not sure if I should leaflet or not. Or wait for word of mouth and small ads post office etc, gum tree, Facebook etc.

Personally, I would exploit contacts, use word of mouth, limited social media, local publications - all low cost and potentially high impact methods.

It is easy to get seduced into spending £00's on advertising and find it is the wrong channel, wrong location, wrong time etc. Vanity is dangerous.

Spend time establishing yourself as a professional provider of garden services, consider what you can and can't take on.

Go research pricing strategies - there are huge debates regarding hourly vs fixed rate. Make sure you understand the financials of these two approaches. You can only start to do this by knowing your own costs (which will rise while you start up and spend money on professional grade tools etc).

Make sure what ever you present to your prospects with regards to quotes, specifications etc are high quality & clear.

  • Thank you, i'll bar theses in mind. I know to avoid spending too much. sticking to the guide in the Paul Power book

  • If you need to get either a van or trailer get a good reliable van Evan if it means borrowing money when I started I bought what I could afford, this was the wrong thing to do as. The van spent time off the road being repaired. I should have borrowed some money and purchased a good van as in the long run it would have been cheaper.
