Mulch vs side shoot

Hi all....this season I've got a new large lawn to mow they

want cut and drop fortnightly it gets it gets 4 feeds

a season, so if we get a wet summer there's going

to be some good growth on it

what would be the best finish on the lawn I.e clumps of grass

I.e dedicated mulched or side shoot mower ?

    Lol (chute)

  • if you have both types of mower set up, sometimes side shoot if its long or wet. at other times mulch. as mulching would give the best finish but only in the better conditions. and adjust the cutting height a bit to suit

  • You ask what the best finish is, well mulching obviously. A very good mulcher will produce a finish as good as collection. Whereas side discharge will leave grass clippings everywhere.

Both of my machines are mulching mowers but one is also selectable between mulch and side discharge. [Stiga 740pwx and John Deere Z535m] If you are using a ride on machine then I would mulch as even if the grass is quite long, you can spin over the ground two or three times if needed in order to mulch perfectly. Hand mowing is a completely different animal and is not really my area.

Although if the client is happy with cut and drop and that’s what they have asked for, why make it more complicated?

On this job here the grass grows very quickly so I often have to go over it twice. It still only takes about twenty minutes though and the finish looks like the grass has been collected rather than mulched. I use either of my machines here and both produce the same finish. The John Deere is faster though, so twice over with that is maybe ten to fifteen minutes.

On this occasion it was the Stiga that I used.

If you're doing the feeds, take into account mulching or drop will give around half the nutrients needed, so adjust your spring and summer feeds accordingly. Too much growth will make it hard to keep up a good finish.

I would go mulching and do a couple of passes.
