Mountfield sp55

Hi, my dealer has a good condition sp55 with twinclip blade in at reasonable money. it has electric start with no pullcord back up and I'm concerned that the starter battery might not last a days' work. It has a mountfield 170 engine. He also has a new one with pull cord and Honda 170 engine. Anyone any experience of these machines? I'm aware they are not commercial grade but I've had non commercial machines that have served me well, just never used a mountfield. Although there's very little grass to cut here in Notts just now! Cheers, Martin.

  • Martin assume you mean the 555 RV, we had the roller version guess you are looking at the wheeled type?

Plus points, very reliable, liked the adjustable handles.

Cons, the twin blade is little more than a gimmick, collection in even damp conditions was hopeless even after we had it opened up. The angle of the grass box as it leans forward is an issue, as you take it off to empty grass it spills grass onto the floor, annoying! No BBC which as you are constantly unblocking it in damp conditions is an issue. We were using it commercially and as mentioned it was reliable but the roller bearings on the roller version are cheap and nasty and needed replacing every couple of months any longer and they chewed the ends of the roller up with a replacement cost of £210 plus vat plus labour. The bearings are only £8 so indicate the quality! The height adjuster is a flimsy bit of tin, guaranteed to snap.

I see they are around £800 for the wheeled type, I would spend the extra on a Hayter or Honda with BBC, unless it's very cheap!

    • Hi, thanks. Yes it is a four wheeler. I guess I'll look at honda/ Stihl instead. I already have a Toro which is good unless the grass is damp- I don't need another machine that can't handle damp grass! Appreciate the reply

      • Martin, if it's any help, we run four Honda HRX537 in a commercial environment. Wouldn't buy anything else, not a commercial machine but does have 12 months commercial warranty, absolute pleasure to use , variable speed, BBC, mulch capability with just a flick of a handle. Found them pretty good collecting in the wet. We will definitely buy more.

We looked at the Stihl, didn't like the grass box or mono handle, personal taste I guess. But our dealer who also sells Honda, Hayter, Toro ,Mountfield as well as Stihl , so no axe to grind told us to stay away due to zero commercial warranty and the amount of warranty claims they have from domestic users.

No doubt there will be other contributors on here who will say how pleased they are with them.

We certainly won't be buying anything else other than the HRX 537.

        Hope that helps.

        • Thanks, I've heard good things about the hrx537, sounds like that's the way forward.

Great mower, had mine a year now, best pedestrian mulcher I've ever used. Fast.

Only couple of things I don't like about are:

1, It needs a bigger more powerful engine, the engine struggles a bit on long wet grass.

2, it can't cut the grass as close as my Honda HRD. The average lawn I would cut on the third notch on previous machines on hrx I use the second notch. On the lowest cut, unless the lawn is dead flat the gear box grounds out, so I set the back wheels on the second notch which sorted that.

          • Yes, know what you mean about grounding. We do a similar thing with wheel adjustment but we run the back on three and the front on either 2 or 1.5. we find it mulches better. But yes it's a fantastic mower,we used to use Honda pro,s but the HRX is so much lighter and manoeuvrable and in our opinion collects as well if not better.

Just wanted to point that out for anyone to save a future head scratch.

Really nimble and light on the front wheels, which takes a bit of getting use to.

I personally would not buy or use any other machine now. I haven't used my HRD since.

+ 1 for the Honda HRX. Been running them for a few years now and haven't seen anything to beat them in terms of an all round, versatile mower. My only gripe with them is that the front wheels always go a bit wonky after a while and there doesn't seem to be a cheap and effective way to repair. That aside though, brilliant mowers.

  • Thanks for the advice, the hrx537 keeps coming up in 'what lawnmower' threads so I called local dealer today. Hardly any discount to be had(£1320) as they are in short supply. None in stock just now and none available straight away but I guess I'll get my name on the list.

    • Martin, one thing I forgot Honda do 2 models the hy and the qy . The hy is the one to get as this has the variable speed control as a lever mounted at the side of the handlebars. The qy is a sort of squeeze arrangement mounted on the top of the handle. Yes I know supply is tight but mow with us are showing stock at £1270 , free delivery.
