Masport Rotarola sp 540

Hi,Does anyone use the Masport Rotarola sp 540 22" cut?Have just been down to local Machinery dealer and was looking at the hayters which i have always stayed loyal too. But am hesitant to buy a new one due to friends telling me of all the problems they have had?So was thinking of maybe trying something new?So any feedback would be much appreciated. Many thanks Iain

    • We used the lawnflites for two years great mower and always picked up in the wet.

The only problem was the drive kept going it wouldn't even last a year, it was covered under warranty but when all three went at once I thought enough was enough and swoped them over winter.

personly untill the new 56 harrier pro has feedback from end users i would go for the lawnflite pro 553 hrs , my mate has 1 and believes buy it ! 21 inch , genuine cast iron honda bore ( commercail grade engine ) also i like the idea of the shaft drive too, i think they roll um out at £900 , this is of course if you are after stripes , if not the sabo built hayter 53 pro ranger ( 4 wheeler ) again about £900 do you now what the power unit is ????
  • I just clicked the button on ebay for one of these, seems great at £608 delivered from FR Jones.

Can't wait! Wonder if I should sell the 16 inch hayter harrier or if I'll really miss it on small gardens?
  • Hi andy was this the previous model you were talking about? Thanks for all your feed back will ring the dealer tomorrow and try and get a days demo. Andy how many hours a week are you using the masport at the moment?
    Manyt thanks iain
  • try 22 rsp will find on ebay. Or search on google.
  • My local masport dealer thought the elaborate drive system (re the tortuous route for the belt) a feature of previous models, no longer an issue with the current designs? And not an issue for wheeled drives.
I was quizzing him as I’m probably going to get the 19” genius (stupid name aside). I’ve always used Maports, reliable, good in the wet, economical (semi)-commercial. And I can lift them in and out of the van. Then again I know someone else whose had a bad experience with them so luck of the draw?
  • Hi, i spoke to masport today and spoke tp a technician in the workshop and he stated that the machine was not intended for commercial use but they ar being used for this.
He did state though he did not know if the handles would with stand hard use and that they are waiting to see how the machine gets on and if it needs tweaking they will do so to bring out a commercial mower with fins and bumpers and reinforced handles?
He did say though that a dealer in the south is selling alot of these to contractors?
  • Hi dan, how are you finding tha masport you have recently purchased?
  • It's not arrived yet Iain. Using my John Deere JS63V for now and really impressed with the way it picks up and packs the bag out, plus the fact it's got a rather fast max speed setting that almost sees you jogging behind it.

Got a couple of domestic jobs that call for the roller though. I'll update you once it's arrived and tested.

  • Since we're all talking mowers I thought I'd mention my first day cutting with the new masport.

Did a commercial site, some very long grass (6 inches), and probably around 1000m2. It did very well, packed out the box extremely tightly such that 3 bagloads was all I put into each of my two dumpy bags due to the weight and lifting them back into the van.

The machine takes a second to pick up on the drive unlike my john deere which is instant, and the drive speed isn't variable (unless I missed that bit), just the throttle. It has a good bit of weight which feels reassuring and the low deck looks good.

I'm guessing this is the first time this site has a) had stripes and b) has grass clippings removed. Hopefully the residents will appreciate it.

I can now leave the john deere as my permanent mulching machine instead of faffing about with the grass bag and chute attachment.

The grass was damp today and perfect performance from masport. I'll write an update if anyhting goes wrong!

How are you getting on with your Masports ? We bought a 22" today.
To date we have only used Hayters. To access the underside Hayters can simply be turned on their side air filter up but I see from the Masport manual they say "only tilt the mower with the spark plug upper most." Given that the B&S engine configeration on Hayters and Masports is the same (oil filler neck on the left and fuel filler & air filter on the right) I can't see why the machine cannot be turned on it's side to the left. How do you access the underside ?
