    Agree, especially if well seasoned.

    If not look at http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/log+splitters/type/...

    or http://www.northerntooluk.com/search.html?fhsearchterm=log+splitters

Bought a basic one years ago for my Dad. Still uses it.

Just make sure your choice is suitably rated for your usage.

  • OK bigstrongmen, nuff of that! Thanks but would like a machine.

  • HI there again!!! Thanks for this, have forwarded it to the relevant person for consideration...

You snowed in? (maybe wrong place to ask...been a bit bad tho hasn't it?)

I would want to try any splitter first, most of the electric ones have a  VERY slow ram speed and are almost painfully to use. The majority of commonly sold cheaper splitters will struggle with 2' rings, most are designed to split to a max of 1'.

To get something half good new  you are talking £1500 ish.

I'm an axe fan, I split with a 14lb elwell axe date stamped made in 1915 reading the grain of the timber and with a decent swing it will split almost any size of ring or wood Anything really big I split using two steel wedges with a light chainsaw boring cut to give a gap for them to get started.

  • i just ordered one of these :  7 tonne , 2200w     520mm length wood.  inc stand to be forwarded on

£250 inc vat and delivery ...................   titan pro direct   as £48 more on e-bay !!

this is direct link .   phoned yesterday and spoke to a guy called Phillip......

  • I use a splitting maul but a customer does have an electric log splitter that has done a manfull job, I use a few different sized oak chocks if using this to save the ram from going full distance otherwise as stated it's a bit slow !!!!

  • So what's a good technique Colin? I've got some trunks up in Brum too heavy to go in skip. I have an axe & prepared to buy a splitting maul if need be but how do I find out about a good technique? Please advise.

i found the splitting axes to cumbersome whereas a good felling axe with good technique is a lot more accurate and effective

A log splitting maul, wood grenade & lump hammer has always been the best quickest way for me.  Hell of a lot cheaper to.
  • You is a real lumberjack man! Some pointers/tips about your technique would be appreciated please as I've got some large trunks to break down for removal. Thank you.

  • We have an electric one which is rarely used as it is so slow.

The guys in the tree team prefer to use a maul and very occasionally a log grenade.

It is a lot more satisfying to whack a log with a maul I must admit!
