  • Not really sure what your point is but I thought for your PL insurance to be valid you had to hold a Lantra cert anyway if you are undertaking tree work?? Maybe wrong but that is what we do to keep ourselves right.

The HSE's Aborculture and Forestry Group (AFAG) produce the following leaflet regarding relevant training and certification:

    http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/afag805.pdf

The industry recogninsed scheme (although not the only scheme) for all but occasional users of saw professionally is run by NPTC.

There are various tickets for various tasks strating with cross cutting, then small diameter trees, medium diameter etc, etc

Anything that involves using the chainsaw using a rope and harness or a cherry picker requires an additional ticket regardless of how high off the ground you are. This is because you then become subject to working at height regulations as well.

I think there will probably be a clause in your PL insurance that states if you had to claim and you were not working to current HSE guidelines it would give your insurance company enough wriggle room to get out of paying.
  • this is for self-employed or 'employed' workers ! stated by health & safety executive .
  • We touched on this before - See http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/nptc-chainsaw-qua...
  • the point i was trying to make is :

anyone (except) on own land MUST HAVE A CERTIFICATE !!!

if you do not have one and are 'spot' checked by the government / HSE i guess you will be fined or cautioned. !!

if you don't have a cert/ or are not doing a course you should get one ASAP.

IT IS A LETHAL MACHINE !!! and can put many peoples lives at Risk or in Danger directly or in-directly with trees/branches not falling where they need to. ...... :-(
