Leaking hedgetrimmer

I bought a new hedgetrimmer a couple of weeks ago, fueled it up, put it in the van and thought no more of it,

when i got to a job i took the lawnmower out and noticed there was petrol on the floor, checked the mower, but that was dry, it was the hedgetrimmer, not even used it yet,

I put it down to it being leant at a slight angle, so I wedge it upright with my buckets and it seemed o.k,

used it a couple of times - no problem.

Used it today - put it on the floor (level) whilst sweeping up, and it leaked again, the fuel is dripping from the air filter/carb.

What the bloody hell is going on with it? had my last hedgetrimmer for over a year it never dripped one drop and it used to be just chucked in the van with no wedgeing etc.

So any suggestions as to what might be wrong?, is it something needing adjusting?

Your help as always would be greatly appreciated.

  • I wouldn't waste a moments thought on it!!......... just take it back to the place you bought it from and let them sort it out under the guarantee.

  • i do too j.p, there is always a slight smell of it in the van but when there's that much spilt it's enough to give you a headache!

i had the same with my stihl single sided hedgetrimmer a pipe had worn so it needed  replacing ...hate the smell of petrol in van grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • I might just do that Geoff, just not got a lot of time at the minute, and if it is just a case of adjusting a screw or something i'd rather do it myself. but if not then you're right, it'll go back!!

  • PRO

I had this problem with a husqy trimmer. It was leaking from a grommet where the fuel pipe comes out of the fuel tank. I pulled the pipe out a few mm and it sorted it. It was'nt new at the time however. Had same thing happen with an old chainsaw too.

  • I'll have a look at the pipes tommorrow, however it is dripping from the air filter, from the carb so i'm not sure as it is that.

  • the fuel cap is dry paul, i had a trimmer a few years ago that leaked from the vent , it used to drip down my shirt when i held it up above head height, bloody annoying. This one has a porous plastic breather which doesn't let the fluid out.

Could be from the fuel tank breather vent.

  • Andrew - hopefully not in your vehicle anymore - petrol fumes and a slight spark make a massive explosion.  Can you not return to your supplier?

  • ive had exactly the same with my hedge cutter. i stripped down the carb and found that the pin on the diaphragm was furred and wasnt shutting the fuel off and there was a constant drip from the jet inside the air intake, i cant stand the smell of petrol in the van its a good job i dont smoke

  • hi tony,

not to worry it's in the shed now,

I will take it back if it's not something simple but to take it back means me having a morning off which is not ideal at the minute, so i just thought i'd pick the brains of you guys to see if it's something easy to fix.

  • Well i'm not doing that it'll have to go back if thats the case here, although i can't imagine how it has become furred as i've only used it a few times.

and i do smoke so it is a bit of a concern :-)
