In 19 years I've never stripped an old lawn unless changing the levels. Top few inches is good soil. I kill old lawns with round-up then rotovate it with least three passes and just rake up the debris.
also leaving the old lawn you will be leaving the weeds as well as hb says kill the old lawn first
Thanks for the info.
makes sense, how long do you leave it for the old lawn to die and to avoid killing the new one.
Two weeks.
Old lawn needs to go.
Can you not off load the old turf at your local green recycling centre. This is an eco way of getting rid off it.
Area needs killed off prior to rotovating and installing turf base sand.
That is a brilliant question Marcus mitchell
I'm working today, got a busy weekend too.
I would love to tell you how I deal with this and why, but it might take till Monday to get back here.
Please do
Far too much hassle...i do get the green aspect , but your making it hard work ... ive not done any of this work for a long time , as I went down the easier maintenance route.but lots of it when i started
Far easier to hire a turf/sod cutter, take top off, then sort your level out. You'll be in and out and on to the next job, whereas you'd still be there if rotavating a lawn up .. your choice .
I'd have thought more hassle and cost. All old turf will need to go out through the house then I'd have to pay to get it collected and taken away. I'm in central london so maybe different to other parts of the country. Thanks for the advise tho
Never had to take through a house, but always found that rolling it up just like new turf , meant that it took less space in a skip ... it worked for me , but like I said, I gave up all landscape work in favour of the easier option.. I've not had to advertise since, whereas I'd be constantly advertising, going out most evenings quoting etc ..plus... its a damn site easier walking behind a mower all day ... I don't miss it ... Good luck with the job .
