Lawnflite 533 Gearbox problems

Anyone had this one or can offer advice.  Three weeks ago the drive to roller on lawnflite 533 pro went.  Took gearbox apart and crown and pinion were worn this after one years contracting, bit dissapointed but thought perhaps thats the lifespan.  Anyway not wanting to pay £200 for new gear box bought new crown and pinion separatly at cost of £35.  last three weeks since replacement worked beautifully and then today it dropped dead again (drive to roller).

Is this a problem other users of lawnflites have come across?

  • Hi Richard

We found this to be a huge problem with our lawnflites, so much so that after two years we had to get rid of all three of ours and go back to Hayter.
It was costing us around £300 each time to fix them. If you do a search there's a load of threads about this problem.
  • Thanks again for info.  Yeah I am starting to think that what I thought were wonderful machines, may not be so great.  Ha ho live and learn.

    • It shouldn't be like that though when we spend nearly £1000 :(

  • No your right but £680 inc Vat year ago wasnt bad price. Its just you do alot of research, speak to people read this forum and still end up buying a dog.  I have a Honda and Hayter both 19in but really wanted good 21in at sensible price.  Spoke to dealer and will sort it under warranty, but it the delay thing.  Will trade one in next year and try another brand.  Not had lots of luck with the Honda.
  • My drive on one of my lawnflites started to play up and i think it was the baring on the drive that went. It only cost just over £100 i think.

Why not speak to justin Jones on here. He is where i take my lawnflites and other tools to when they need repairing. He can probably help you more.

  • I've repaired a couple of these gearboxes on Kaaz mowers..........  for the sake of a few pounds, its worth replacing the selector fork and the clutch dog at the same time so that all the breakable bits are sorted. I wouldn't be surprised if the selector fork has now broken causing your loss of power or the lever that operates the fork. At least the gearbox comes aprt fairly easily!!

We must be lucky as we have 3 kaaz/lawnflyte rollers in use for yeas. Oldest 2004, then 2009 k 2011 models. Looking at hour meters they are each used 3-5 hrs per day during main season.

Machine logs show only service items, a couple of broken front wheel carriers, several cables and 1 Honda exhaust shield.

I've mentioned before in other threads on this subject as to whether the problems are down to how they are used, looked after or ground conditions (ie dusty, sandy).

So surprised by the above. I'm the opposite we dropped Hayter due to b's engines, outdated designs and I think a lack of focus by them on contractor grade machines since their take over.

I guess I will have give my guys a pay on the back due to 'no problems'
  • a dealer told me that the worst thing you can do for these gearboxes is to engage them while the machine is being pulled backwards......... apparently wears things out much quicker

Give it a bit of a helping hand when setting off.

No, all ours have been tweaked by our friendly dealer they run ~ 3000-3100 rpm - we have hour/ rev meters fitted.

Interesting point from Geoff re: pulling backwards ...
