Hi Dougie, depends on how often used and what size of lawns.

For small lawns / difficult access, get a hand spreader. Ok for upto say 300sqm - I would get one of these irrespective:

For larger lawns, depends on budget; would recommend either:

Andy, how do you find calibrating them on low application (or double pass) rates?

100% what i would recommend too!

  • Hi I have been actually be looking at the earthway products 2150  was one of them I was looking at for all the time it will get use doesn't get used that much to be honest

The hand spreaders are not calibrated per say - that sounds bad, but it not a problem, as 1 full scoop weighs around 3kg or just below, so this gives 100sqm coverage at approx 30g/sqm. Then its just a matter of deciding how to apply. I do 2 orthogonal passes at a slightly faster than average pace on the widest opening (5). Some do a single slow pass. We have measurements for each lawn, so it's just a matter of number of scoops or fraction thereof.

Top advice from Andrew for the spreaders. We have both the ICL SR2000 and the handy green one at our disposal

A note re the handheld spreader. There are green ones like this available in garden centres for around £10. Don't buy them - they clog up after a few uses. The ICL/Scotts handy one has 3 screws in the base plate. The earthway red spreader only takes 1kg of granules, so too small for most lawns.

Also, if you're using both the hand one and a wheeled version like the sr2000, then we've found that 2-3mm granule size works on both; go to 3-4mm and the hand one is not so good - clogs. Likewise, go to 1-1.5mm and the SR2000 struggles and needs careful monioring / calibration. Not worth the hassle.

My original use for the hand spreader was for a 3g/sqm pesticde not available anymore - so they are very good at very low dose rates.

  • Is the earthway 2600a any good

Occasional use only IMO. It's half the price of the 2150, and it shows in component thickness and mechanical mechanisms like the drive/mix spindle transfer.

    IMO.

To put it in context, I started with the 2150 and it lasted 3 seasons of very heavy use before components rusting out. I would expect the 2600 to last less. The SR2000's our oldest is over 5 years old and still going strong.

So for occasional use, it's ok, but not several lawns a day.
